How should we respond when our plans differ from God's revealed purposes? Setting the Scene in Numbers 23 Balak, king of Moab, hired Balaam to curse Israel. Twice God overruled, turning Balaam’s intended curses into blessings. Unwilling to accept God’s verdict, Balak tries a third location: “Then Balak said to Balaam, ‘Please come, I will take you to another place; perhaps it will please God that you may curse this people for me from there.’ ” (Numbers 23:27) Balak’s plan: move the prophet, shift the vantage point, and force a different outcome. God’s purpose: bless Israel, period. The clash is clear—human preference versus divine decree. Balak’s Repeated Scheme vs. God’s Unchanging Word • Balak believes altered circumstances might change God’s mind. • God’s blessing on Israel remains firm despite new scenery (cf. Numbers 23:19). • Balaam cannot curse whom God has blessed; he must speak only “the word that God puts in my mouth” (Numbers 22:38). Lessons for Our Own Detours • God’s purposes are steadfast; moving the pieces around will not bend His will. • Persistence in a plan God has already denied is futile and spiritually dangerous. • Our confidence rests in God’s sovereignty, not in the ingenuity of our next attempt. • When resistance to God’s direction grows, so do frustration and wasted effort—Balak spends resources, time, and energy, gaining nothing but disappointment. Practical Steps When Our Plans Clash with God’s 1. Pause and re-examine. ‑ Ask, “Has God already spoken through His Word or providence?” (Psalm 119:105). 2. Surrender in faith. ‑ “Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him, and He will do it.” (Psalm 37:5) 3. Adjust your course. ‑ “A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9) 4. Speak humbly. ‑ Replace “I will” with “If the Lord is willing” (James 4:13-15). 5. Watch for redirected opportunities. ‑ Paul’s team, blocked from Asia, was led to Macedonia instead (Acts 16:6-10). 6. Guard against stubborn repetition. ‑ Balak’s third try shows that repeating a rejected idea only deepens disobedience. Encouraging Promises That Carry Us Forward • “Many plans are in a man’s heart, but the purpose of the LORD will prevail.” (Proverbs 19:21) • “The LORD foils the plans of the nations… but the plans of the LORD stand firm forever.” (Psalm 33:10-11) • “For I know the plans I have for you… plans for welfare and not for calamity, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11) When God’s revealed purpose overrides our agenda, the wisest response is immediate submission, trusting that His unchanging plan is always better than our best alternate location. |
