How to aid believers in trials?
How can we support fellow believers facing trials similar to Hebrews 11:38?

The Verse in View

“the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and hid in caves and holes in the ground.” (Hebrews 11:38)

Understanding the Weight of Such Trials

• These believers were hunted, homeless, and isolated.

• Their suffering resulted from fidelity to God’s revealed truth, not personal failure.

• Scripture states plainly—and therefore accurately—that these heroes were “not worthy” of a hostile world.

Shared Responsibility for the Suffering Body

Hebrews 13:3: “Remember those in prison as if you were bound with them, and those who are mistreated as if you were suffering with them.”

1 Corinthians 12:26: “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it.”

Galatians 6:2: “Carry one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

Because each passage is God-breathed and literal, we receive them as direct marching orders.

Strengthen Them With Scripture

• Read persecuted friends Hebrews 11:32-40; remind them their story fits the same unbroken line of faith.

• Offer 2 Timothy 3:12—“Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted”—so they know their hardship is expected, not unusual.

• Share Psalm 34:18; Psalm 46:1; 1 Peter 4:12-13 for immediate comfort straight from God’s voice.

Practical, Tangible Support

• Provide safe lodging, legal counsel, transportation, or medical care when flight or secrecy is necessary.

• Supply food, clothing, communication devices, and financial help without waiting to be asked (Acts 4:34-35).

• Write letters, send secure messages, or record audio encouragements saturated with Scripture.

• Guard their privacy; refuse to spread details that could endanger them.

Spiritual Partnership

• Fast and intercede specifically for endurance, wisdom, and bold witness (Colossians 4:3-4).

• Gather believers for regular corporate prayer, naming persecuted individuals aloud.

• Celebrate each answer God gives—small victories reinforce hope.

Guard Them From Discouragement

• Visit in person when possible; presence communicates worth.

• Relay testimonies of how their stand is emboldening others (Philippians 1:14).

• Speak words of life, avoiding clichés; affirm their identity in Christ and future reward (Matthew 5:11-12).

Maintain an Eternal Perspective Together

Romans 8:18: “Our present sufferings are not comparable to the glory that will be revealed in us.”

Revelation 2:10: “Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.”

Hebrews 10:34 reminds us of the lasting possession kept in heaven.

Model Christ’s Love Before a Watching World

• Practice sacrificial generosity; outsiders will see living proof of the gospel (John 13:35).

• Speak respectfully of authorities yet remain unashamed of truth, mirroring Acts 4:19-20.

• Encourage joyful obedience; suffering does not negate rejoicing (Acts 5:41).

Continual Commitment

Support is not a one-time gesture but an ongoing devotion until relief comes or the Lord returns. Faithful companions mirror the faithfulness of the God who wrote and preserves these promises.

In what ways can our faith challenge societal norms, as in Hebrews 11:38?
