How to aid others in gospel suffering?
How can we support others in their suffering for the gospel?

Verse at the Heart

“So do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me, His prisoner. Instead, join me in suffering for the gospel by the power of God.” (2 Timothy 1:8)

What Paul Is Saying

• Being “ashamed” shuts our mouths and distances us from suffering believers.

• “Join me” is an open invitation to step into their hardship.

• “By the power of God” reminds us we never depend on mere human grit; the Spirit supplies strength.

Practical Ways to Stand with the Persecuted

• Identify publicly with them

– Speak their names and stories (Hebrews 13:3).

– Refuse to let ridicule or backlash silence you (Mark 8:38).

• Pray deliberately and specifically

– Ask for boldness (Acts 4:29).

– Intercede for deliverance, yet also for endurance (Colossians 1:11).

• Provide tangible help

– Share resources: finances, letters, legal aid (Philippians 4:14-16).

– Open your home if refugees need shelter (Romans 12:13).

• Encourage through presence

– Visit or contact them regularly (2 Timothy 1:16-17).

– Celebrate their faith victories, mourn their losses (1 Corinthians 12:26).

• Keep proclaiming the gospel yourself

– Their chains advance the word; our bold witness multiplies that effect (Philippians 1:12-14).

– Consistent testimony assures them their labor is not isolated.

Scriptural Examples and Encouragements

• Jonathan standing with David when Saul hunted him (1 Samuel 23:16-17).

• The church in Acts gathering to pray after Peter and John’s arrest (Acts 4:23-31).

• The Philippians sending Epaphroditus to care for Paul in prison (Philippians 2:25-30).

• The Macedonians giving generously out of extreme poverty to aid saints in Jerusalem (2 Corinthians 8:1-4).

Why Our Support Matters Eternally

• It fulfills Christ’s law of love (Galatians 6:2).

• It demonstrates the unity Jesus prayed for (John 17:22-23).

• It brings comfort that overflows into thanksgiving to God (2 Corinthians 1:3-7; 9:12-14).

• It stores up imperishable treasure and welcomes us into eternal joy (Matthew 25:34-40).
