How to aid others in tough times?
How can we support others who are "faint" during their trials?

Key Passage: 1 Thessalonians 5:14

“We urge you, brothers, to admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone.”

What Does “Fainthearted” Mean?

• Literally, “small-souled”—those whose inner strength feels drained.

• They’re overwhelmed, anxious, or discouraged by hardship.

• God’s call is not to scold them for weakness but to “encourage” (come alongside, speak comfort).

Ways to Encourage the Fainthearted

1. Speak Hope from Scripture

• Share promises that address their struggle:

Psalm 34:18 “ The LORD is near to the brokenhearted…”

Isaiah 40:29 “He gives power to the faint; to him who has no might He increases strength.”

• Read passages aloud, text them, or write them in a note. God’s Word carries the strength we cannot supply ourselves (Hebrews 4:12).

2. Bear the Load Together

Galatians 6:2 “Carry one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

• Offer concrete help: meals, child-care, rides, financial assistance, or simply sitting in silence.

• Let them know they don’t have to face the trial alone (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10).

3. Pray with Persistence

• “Help the weak” (1 Thessalonians 5:14) includes interceding when they feel too drained to pray.

2 Corinthians 1:11 shows the power of many joining in prayer; God uses it to deliver.

4. Practice Patient Presence

• Trials seldom resolve quickly. Patience guards us from frustration when progress seems slow.

James 1:19 “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak.” Listen more than you lecture.

5. Speak Life-Giving Words

Proverbs 16:24 “Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.”

• Affirm evidences of God’s grace you see in them. Remind them they are loved, not a burden.

6. Model Perseverance

• Your calm trust in God becomes a living illustration (Philippians 4:9).

• Share testimonies of God’s past faithfulness—yours or others—to fuel their hope (Psalm 77:11-12).

Guard Your Own Heart While You Help

• Draw strength daily from prayer and the Word (Isaiah 40:31).

• Serve out of love, not savior-complex; only Christ redeems.

• Invite others to join you so the weight is shared (Mark 2:3-4).

Look to Christ’s Example

Matthew 12:20 “A bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not extinguish.”

• Jesus tenderly lifts the faint; we follow His pattern.

Takeaways for Today

• Encouraging the fainthearted is a command, not a suggestion.

• God supplies the strength we pass along.

• Even small acts—an encouraging text, a shared meal, a listening ear—become channels of His sustaining grace.
