How to align decisions with God's will?
What steps can we take to ensure our decisions align with God's will?

Setting the Scene: A Rapid Decision in 2 Kings 3:6

“ So King Jehoram marched out of Samaria at that time and mobilized all Israel.”

Jehoram’s quick mobilization shows a leader leaping into action before consulting the Lord. His army soon faced drought in the desert, forcing him to seek prophetic counsel after the fact. From this episode we learn how to ensure our own decisions start—and stay—in God’s will.

Slow Down and Seek God First

• Scripture places prayerful inquiry ahead of planning.

 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart… in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

• Practical step: build a pause. Before you “mobilize,” dedicate even urgent matters to focused prayer, asking, “Lord, what do You want?”

Confirm Through Godly Counsel

• Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no prophet of the Lord here?” (2 Kings 3:11). Wise voices redirected the kings to Elisha.

• “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” (Proverbs 11:14)

• Seek mature believers who know Scripture and aren’t afraid to question your plans.

Align Motives With God’s Purposes

• Jehoram’s motive was political survival; God’s purpose was larger—demonstrating His power.

• “Whatever you do, in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” (Colossians 3:17)

• Ask, “Will this decision promote God’s glory or merely my agenda?”

Wait for Clear Direction

• Elisha waited for a musician; the Spirit spoke once hearts were quiet (2 Kings 3:15-17).

• “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him.” (Psalm 37:7)

• Silence, Scripture meditation, and journaling help you discern God’s “yes,” “no,” or “not yet.”

Act in Faithful Obedience Once God Speaks

• “Thus says the Lord: ‘Make this valley full of ditches.’ … This is an easy thing in the sight of the Lord.” (2 Kings 3:16-18)

• Faith digs ditches before water arrives. Move forward promptly when God’s instruction is clear (John 13:17).

Keep Worship Central

• Elisha’s prophecy flowed after worship (2 Kings 3:15).

• “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

• A worshipful heart guards against fear-driven or pride-driven choices.

A Simple Checklist for Decision-Making

1. Have I prayed and asked God specifically for guidance? (James 1:5)

2. Have I searched Scripture for principles that speak to this choice?

3. Have I discussed it with trusted, Bible-anchored counselors?

4. Are my motives centered on God’s glory, not self-interest?

5. Have I sensed a settled peace from the Holy Spirit? (Colossians 3:15)

6. Am I ready to obey promptly, even if instructions seem unusual?

7. Will I continue in worship and gratitude whatever the outcome?

Follow these steps and, unlike Jehoram’s hasty march, your decisions will begin—and end—in the center of God’s revealed will.
