What steps can we take to align our inner and outer lives? Exposed by Jesus’ Words “ ‘So also, on the outside you appear to be righteous, but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.’ ” (Matthew 23:28) Jesus’ indictment of the Pharisees warns every believer to make sure the righteousness people see is the righteousness God sees. How do we get there? Step 1 – Invite a Heart Inspection • Pray Psalm 139:23-24 aloud and mean it: “Search me, O God, and know my heart….” • Give the Spirit permission to surface hidden motives, grudges, secret sins, and misplaced affections. • Keep a journal; note what He shows you so nothing slips back into hiding. Step 2 – Confess and Turn • “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive…” (1 John 1:9). • Name each sin; agree with God about its seriousness. • Apply Proverbs 28:13—renounce the sin and replace it with obedience. Step 3 – Immerse the Heart in Scripture • The Word “judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). Read it daily, not for information only but transformation. • Memorize verses; hide them inside as Psalm 119:11 prescribes. • Ask, “What does this passage command, promise, warn, or reveal about God?” Then live it. Step 4 – Walk by the Spirit • “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16). • Begin each day surrendering control; throughout the day, listen for His promptings. • Nurture the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). Where love, joy, peace, etc., grow on the inside, hypocrisy has no room to sprout outside. Step 5 – Choose Transparent Community • James 5:16 urges mutual confession and prayer. Let trusted believers know where you struggle. • Hebrews 10:24-25 reminds us to meet together and spur one another on. Authentic fellowship keeps masks off. Step 6 – Practice Consistent Obedience • Jesus said, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments” (John 14:15). • Obedience in small, private matters trains the soul for visible faithfulness. • James 1:22 warns that hearing without doing leaves us self-deceived—exactly the condition Jesus rebuked in Matthew 23. Step 7 – Guard Motives and Aims • Let Colossians 3:17 steer every action: “Whatever you do… do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” • Filter choices through 1 Corinthians 10:31—will this bring God glory or just polish my image? • When applause comes, redirect it upward; when criticism comes, let it drive you deeper into humility. Step 8 – Live the Same Way in Public and Private • Micah 6:8 calls for justice, mercy, and humility; Romans 12:9 insists, “Love must be sincere.” • Align schedules, spending, media habits, and relationships with these truths. • The more the gospel shapes daily rhythms, the less gap remains between who we truly are and who others see. The Outcome As Scripture saturates the heart, the Spirit empowers obedience, and community fosters honesty, inner reality and outer testimony converge. People glimpse Christ in us, and God receives the glory He deserves. |
