In what ways can we ensure our lives align with God's instructions today? Following the Footsteps of Luke 2:39 “When Jesus’ parents had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.” (Luke 2:39) Mary and Joseph didn’t pick and choose commands. They “had done everything.” Only then did they move on to their normal routines. Their wholehearted obedience sets the tone for how we, too, can keep our lives aligned with God’s instructions. Why Complete Obedience Still Matters • Jesus affirmed it: “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” (John 14:15) • Scripture demands it: “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” (James 1:22) • God equips us for it: “All Scripture is God-breathed… so that the man of God may be complete, fully equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17) Partial obedience isn’t obedience. Alignment means bringing every corner of life under His Word—just as Jesus’ parents did. Practical Paths to Alignment 1. Saturate your mind with Scripture • “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105) • “This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night.” (Joshua 1:8) 2. Apply the Word immediately • When the Spirit convicts through a verse or sermon, do what Mary and Joseph did—act right away. 3. Walk by the Spirit • “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16) • Daily surrender invites His power to obey beyond mere willpower. 4. Build a Scripture-centered home • “You shall teach them diligently to your children… when you sit at home and when you walk along the road.” (Deuteronomy 6:5-7) • Post verses, sing truth, talk about God’s works around the dinner table. 5. Commit to gathered worship and accountability • “Let us not neglect meeting together… but let us encourage one another.” (Hebrews 10:24-25) • The church family sharpens, corrects, and cheers us on. 6. Filter every decision through Christ’s name • “Whatever you do… do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” (Colossians 3:16-17) • Ask, “Can I sign Jesus’ name to this purchase, conversation, or website?” 7. Keep short accounts with God • “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive.” (1 John 1:9) • Quick repentance restores fellowship and realigns priorities. 8. Trust, don’t lean on self • “Trust in the LORD with all your heart… and He will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6) • Obedience flows from confidence in His wisdom, not ours. Living It Out in the Ordinary Mary and Joseph’s faithfulness happened in the mundane: presenting Jesus at the temple, then heading home to Nazareth. Likewise, alignment shows up in: • Honest taxes and timesheets • Patient parenting after long days • Integrity on screens when no one’s looking • Generous giving that rearranges budgets • Words that match God’s heart in every conversation When today’s choices echo the “everything required by the Law of the Lord,” we mirror the obedience of Luke 2:39 and keep our lives joyfully in step with God’s perfect design. |
