How to avoid being an adversary?
What practical steps can we take to avoid being counted among "Your adversaries"?

Setting the Scene

“ They speak of You with evil intent; Your adversaries misuse Your name.” (Psalm 139:20)

David contrasts those who revere the Lord with those who oppose Him. The aim is simple: live so that God never has to place us in the second group.

Recognize God’s Sovereign Lordship

• Submit every area of life to His authority (James 4:7).

• Accept Scripture as the final word on truth and conduct (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

• Cultivate daily worship—acknowledging who He is shapes who we become.

Embrace a Heart of Humility and Repentance

• Regularly invite the Spirit to search you: “Search me, O God…see if there is any offensive way in me” (Psalm 139:23-24).

• Confess sin promptly (1 John 1:9). Delayed confession breeds hardness.

• Replace excuses with surrender; God “opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6).

Guard Your Speech and Use of His Name

• Refuse careless or irreverent words about God (Exodus 20:7).

• Speak truth in love; slander and gossip align us with adversaries (Ephesians 4:29).

• Let worship overflow into everyday conversation, praising rather than profaning His name (Psalm 34:1).

Align Your Affections with God’s Word

• Love what He loves, hate what He hates (Romans 12:9).

• Saturate your mind with Scripture—meditation renews desires (Psalm 1:2-3).

• Evaluate entertainment and relationships through Philippians 4:8.

Pursue Holiness in Community

• Stay planted in a Bible-teaching church (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Invite accountability; “iron sharpens iron” (Proverbs 27:17).

• Serve others—adversaries live for self, disciples lay down their lives (Mark 10:45).

Stay Vigilant Through Prayer and the Spirit

• “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17) to keep your heart tender.

• Rely on the Spirit’s power; fleshly strength fails (Galatians 5:16-17).

• Celebrate small victories, recognizing they are His work (Philippians 2:13).

Daily Checklist

□ Begin with Scripture and surrendered prayer.

□ Speak God-honoring words throughout the day.

□ Confess sin the moment it appears.

□ Choose activities that deepen, not dull, affection for Christ.

□ Encourage another believer; serve someone in need.

□ End the day thanking God for His preserving grace.

Living out these steps distances us from those who misuse His name and aligns us with the One who calls us friend, not foe (John 15:15).
