How to avoid creating sacred pillars?
How can we avoid setting up "sacred pillars" in our own lives?

Opening verse

Deuteronomy 16:22

“and do not set up for yourselves a sacred pillar, which the LORD your God hates.”

What were sacred pillars

• Stone monuments erected by the Canaanites to honor fertility gods and local deities

• Placed on high hills and near altars to draw worship away from the LORD (1 Kings 14:23)

• Symbols of compromise that God commanded Israel to destroy (Exodus 23:24; Deuteronomy 12:3)

Why God forbids them

• They violate the first commandment—exclusive loyalty to Him (Exodus 20:3–5)

• They invite spiritual adultery and judgment (Hosea 4:12–13)

• They lead hearts to trust created things instead of the Creator (Jeremiah 2:27)

• God desires worship “in spirit and truth,” not through man-made objects (John 4:23–24)

Spotting modern sacred pillars

• Money and material comfort that quietly claim first place (Matthew 6:24)

• Success, reputation, or influence pursued above obedience (Luke 16:15)

• Pleasure and entertainment that dull hunger for Scripture and prayer (2 Timothy 3:4)

• Relationships idolized—family, romance, or friendships elevated over God (Luke 14:26)

• Self-reliance and autonomy that crowd out humble dependence (Proverbs 3:5–6)

• Religious activities done for image rather than love for Christ (Isaiah 29:13)

Practical steps to tear them down

1. Invite God’s searchlight daily

 • “Search me, O God… see if there is any offensive way in me” (Psalm 139:23–24)

2. Name and repent of every rival love

 • “Little children, keep yourselves from idols” (1 John 5:21)

3. Set minds on things above

 • “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:2)

4. Practice grateful stewardship

 • Regularly release resources, time, and talents for kingdom work (1 Timothy 6:17–19)

5. Build rhythms that magnify Christ

 • Word intake, worship, fasting, and service replace empty pillars with living altars (Romans 12:1)

6. Walk with accountable believers

 • “Spur one another on toward love and good deeds” (Hebrews 10:24–25)

Keeping Christ at the center

When the heart treasures Christ above all, counterfeit pillars lose their appeal. “Put to death… greed, which is idolatry” (Colossians 3:5), and “serve the LORD with sincerity and truth” (Joshua 24:14). Continual surrender keeps life free of monuments that God hates and filled instead with the joy of wholehearted worship.
