How can we ensure we do not "prey on the barren woman"? The Anchor Verse “He preys on the barren woman and does no good for the widow.” (Job 24:21) Understanding the Context • Job lists sins of ruthless people: exploiting the weak, including childless women and widows. • The Lord’s moral standard is clear—those who cannot defend themselves must never be used, ignored, or shamed (Deuteronomy 10:18; Psalm 68:5). The Call to Compassion • Scripture consistently identifies God as defender of the vulnerable. • James 1:27: “Religion that is pure and undefiled before our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” • By extension, childless women—often overlooked—fall under this protective concern. Practical Ways to Honor the Childless • Speak with sensitivity – Avoid careless remarks such as “When are you having kids?” (Proverbs 12:18). – Offer encouragement rooted in God’s truth: Psalm 113:9, Isaiah 54:1. • Include them intentionally – Invite them into family-oriented gatherings without assuming they feel out of place. – Share life beyond parent-centric topics (Romans 12:15). • Offer tangible help – Accompany them to medical appointments if requested. – Support adoption or foster-care journeys should they pursue these avenues (Galatians 6:2). • Guard against gossip – Refuse to speculate about the reasons for infertility (Ephesians 4:29). • Celebrate their God-given purpose – Affirm that fruitfulness in Scripture extends beyond biological children (John 15:8; 1 Corinthians 7:34-35). Guarding Our Hearts from Subtle Cruelty • Examine motives regularly (Psalm 139:23-24). • Repent quickly of envy, pride, or indifference (1 John 1:9). • Cultivate empathy by remembering Christ’s compassion for the marginalized (Matthew 9:36). • Establish accountability within the church family so attitudes harming the childless are lovingly corrected (Hebrews 3:13). Living Reflections of Christ • Jesus welcomed those society sidelined; we do likewise by honoring women who long for children yet wait. • Our words, actions, and fellowship become a testimony that the body of Christ values every member equally (1 Corinthians 12:22-26). |
