How to avoid rebelling against God?
How can we ensure we are not among those "who rebel" against God?

Focus Verse

“There are those who rebel against the light; they do not recognize its ways or stay on its paths.” (Job 24:13)

Rebellion Unmasked

– “Rebel against the light” means turning from what God has revealed and choosing darkness (John 3:19).

– It shows up as:

• Ignoring Scripture (Jeremiah 6:16–17)

• Resisting conviction (Acts 7:51)

• Choosing self-rule over God’s rule (Judges 21:25)

Why Rebellion Is Serious

– Rebellion is equated with witchcraft (1 Samuel 15:23).

– It hardens the heart, making repentance increasingly difficult (Hebrews 3:12–13).

– It invites God’s discipline (Psalm 107:10–12).

Staying Off the Path of Rebellion

1. Love the Light

– “Walk as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8).

– Daily read and obey Scripture (Psalm 119:11).

2. Keep a Soft Heart

– Confess sin quickly (1 John 1:9).

– Invite God to search you (Psalm 139:23–24).

3. Cultivate Holy Fear

– Remember God’s holiness and justice (Hebrews 12:28–29).

– Let His kindness lead you to continual repentance (Romans 2:4).

4. Stay Accountable

– Meet with believers who “spur one another on toward love and good deeds” (Hebrews 10:24).

– Welcome correction from wise friends (Proverbs 27:6).

5. Depend on the Spirit

– “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16).

– Pray for strength to obey (Ephesians 3:16).

Fruit of Loyalty, Not Rebellion

– Clear conscience (2 Timothy 1:3)

– Growing discernment (Philippians 1:9–10)

– Increasing joy and stability (Psalm 112:6–7)

– Eternal reward (Revelation 2:10)

Staying close to the Light keeps us safely outside the ranks of those who rebel against God.

Compare Ezekiel 20:38 with Hebrews 12:6. How does God discipline His children?
