How to be "good" in Matthew 13:48?
How can we ensure we are among the "good" in Matthew 13:48?

Setting the scene

“ ‘When it was full, the men hauled it to shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away.’ ” (Matthew 13:48)

What makes a fish “good”?

• Jesus is picturing the final separation of people (vv. 49-50).

• “Good” is not about natural merit; it is about being acceptable to God through Christ (Romans 3:23-24).

• “Bad” (lit. worthless) points to those who reject the gospel (John 3:18).

Receiving new life—first and essential step

• Admit the need: “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)

• Believe in Christ’s finished work: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

• Confess Him openly: “If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9-10)

• Rest in grace, not works: “For it is by grace you have been saved through faith… not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Living as the “good fish” every day

• Walk in newness: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

• Feed on the Word: “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.” (1 Peter 2:2)

• Keep in step with the Spirit, bearing fruit (Galatians 5:22-23).

• Practice holiness: “Be holy, because I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:16)

• Remain watchful and steadfast (1 Corinthians 15:58).

Cultivating readiness for the harvest

1. Daily repentance—quickly turning from sin (1 John 1:9).

2. Consistent fellowship—encouraging and being accountable (Hebrews 10:24-25).

3. Active service—using gifts for the kingdom (1 Peter 4:10-11).

4. Hope-filled anticipation—looking for Christ’s return (Titus 2:13).

Encouragement to hold fast

“The Lord knows those who are His.” (2 Timothy 2:19)

Stand secure in His grace, pursue a life that reflects His character, and you can face the final sorting with confidence, counted among the good.
