How can we cultivate a relationship with Jesus similar to John's? A Seat Beside the Savior “One of His disciples, the one whom Jesus loved, was reclining at His side.” (John 13:23) - John positioned himself physically and spiritually as near to Jesus as possible. - Closeness was not accidental; it was pursued. Lean In: Choosing Intimacy Over Distance - Decide daily to draw near. “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:8) - Set apart unhurried time that lets you “recline” next to Christ—Scripture reading, worship, silent adoration. - Guard this time the way John guarded his place at the table. Listen Well: Attentiveness to His Word - John recorded long sections of Jesus’ teaching because he listened. We listen by: • Reading entire passages, not just verses. • Memorizing: “I have hidden Your word in my heart…” (Psalm 119:11). • Meditating until His voice becomes familiar. Love Practically: Obedience that Delights His Heart - “Whoever has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me.” (John 14:21) - Obedience turns affection into action. - Keep short accounts—repent quickly when you stumble. Live Near: Abiding as a Lifestyle - “Remain in Me, and I will remain in you.” (John 15:4-5) • Continual dependence, like branch to vine. • Conversational prayer throughout the day. • Yielding every decision to His lordship. Savor His Affection: Secure Identity as the Beloved - John called himself “the disciple whom Jesus loved.” - You are equally loved (John 17:23). - Reject orphan thinking; rest in His covenant commitment. Guard the Fellowship: Repentance and Purity - Sin dulls intimacy. - Confess promptly (1 John 1:9) to keep the channel clear. - Pursue holiness in thought, word, and deed. Share the Overflow: Point Others to the Lamb - John’s closeness produced witness: “We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard…” (1 John 1:3). - Speak of Jesus naturally; invite others to “taste and see.” - Service done in His name extends the fellowship outward. Today’s Invitation Take your place beside Him. Lean in, listen, love, and live near—until His heartbeat becomes the rhythm of your own. |
