In what ways can we strengthen our trust in God amidst challenges? The Scene on the Wall “Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out loudly in Hebrew: ‘Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria!’” (2 Kings 18:28) Assyria’s spokesman was shouting fear, but inside Jerusalem Hezekiah was quietly anchoring himself and his people in the LORD’s sure promise (2 Kings 19:1–7). Their response shows us how to strengthen our own trust when challenges roar. Recognizing the Voice of Intimidation • The enemy magnifies present threats and minimizes God’s power (18:30). • He speaks in our own “language,” aiming straight at the heart. • He demands quick surrender, leaving no room for patient faith. Remembering the Unchanging Character of God • Sovereign: “The LORD of Hosts has sworn: ‘Surely, as I have planned, so will it be’” (Isaiah 14:24). • Faithful: “For the word of the LORD is upright, and all His work is trustworthy” (Psalm 33:4). • Mighty Deliverer: “The LORD your God is He who goes with you to fight for you … to give you the victory” (Deuteronomy 20:4). Anchoring Ourselves in the Word • Read daily, even when emotions object—truth steadies. • Memorize key promises; speak them aloud when fear presses. – Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble.” – Psalm 56:3 “When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.” • Meditate, letting Scripture turn into settled conviction rather than fleeting thought. Recounting God’s Past Faithfulness • Trace His interventions in your own life. Write them down. • Revisit biblical deliverances—Red Sea, Jericho, the cross and empty tomb. • Share testimonies within your family or church; hearing others fuels confidence. Choosing Obedience Despite Fear • Hezekiah tore his clothes yet still went to the temple (2 Kings 19:1). Feeling fear is not failure; surrendering to it is. • Stay faithful in the small assignments of the day—integrity at work, kindness at home, purity in thought. Obedience trains trust. • Refuse shortcuts (alliances with Egypt) that bypass God’s timing. Inviting Community Support • Hezekiah sent leaders to Isaiah (19:2 – 5). Seek mature believers who speak truth, not panic. • Worship together; corporate praise drowns out the enemy’s taunts (2 Chronicles 20:21 – 22). • Carry one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2); isolation breeds doubt. Setting Our Eyes on Christ • Jesus embodies every promise: “Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). • At the cross He silenced the ultimate intimidator; resurrection proves no threat prevails over Him. • Our battles are real, but victory has already been secured (John 16:33). Living the Outcome When the Rabshakeh’s voice fell silent, “the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians” (2 Kings 19:35). God’s people awoke to victory they did not earn but simply received by trusting His word. The same God stands with us today. Strengthen trust by fixing on His character, saturating in His Word, recalling His deeds, walking in obedience, leaning on community, and looking steadfastly to Christ. |
