How to discern God's messages today?
How can we discern God's messages in our lives today, like Micah?

The Word That Came to Micah

“This is the word of the LORD that came to Micah of Moresheth in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah—what he saw regarding Samaria and Jerusalem.” (Micah 1:1)

Micah’s Example: Listening for the Lord

• Micah received a direct, unmistakable word from God during a specific historic setting.

• His prophetic ministry flowed from personal encounter, not mere speculation.

• The accuracy and literal nature of Scripture assure us that the same living God still speaks.

Scripture Speaks: Our Primary Channel

2 Timothy 3:16 – “All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.”

Hebrews 4:12 – “The word of God is living and active, sharper than any double-edged sword.”

• Regular, prayerful reading sets the heart in tune with God’s voice so that personal impressions align with written truth.

Walking in Step with the Spirit

John 16:13 – “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth.”

Romans 8:14 – “All who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.”

• The indwelling Spirit illuminates Scripture, convicts of sin, and nudges the believer toward obedience, mirroring how Micah was moved to speak.

Cultivating a Listening Heart Today

• Set aside unrushed time daily for Bible intake and quiet reflection.

• Keep a journal of insights that arise while reading, noting verses that stand out repeatedly.

• Maintain a posture of yieldedness, ready to act on whatever God highlights.

• Surround yourself with godly counsel (Proverbs 11:14) to confirm and refine what you sense.

Testing and Confirming the Message

1 John 4:1 – “Test the spirits to see whether they are from God.”

• Any prompting must harmonize with the whole counsel of Scripture.

• Look for the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) accompanying the message.

• Observe providential circumstances that open or close doors in line with biblical principles.

Living Out What We Hear

James 1:22 – “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.”

• Micah’s proclamation led to specific calls for justice and repentance (Micah 6:8).

• Obedience strengthens spiritual hearing; neglect dulls it.

• As believers step out in faith, God’s voice becomes clearer, and His purposes advance in and through their lives.
