How can we apply the disciples' actions to our own faith journey today? Setting the Scene “Then John’s disciples informed him about all these things.” (Luke 7:18) John was in prison (Luke 3:20). He could not witness Jesus’ works firsthand, so his disciples carried the reports. Their simple action—observing, reporting, obeying—offers several clear steps for our own walk with Christ. Cultivating Attentive Hearts • They watched Jesus closely. • They noticed His miracles and teaching. • They recognized the significance of what they saw. Application • Stay alert to God’s activity in daily life (Psalm 66:5). • Keep a journal of answered prayer and providential moments. • Spend time in the Gospels to sharpen spiritual sight (John 20:30-31). Sharing What We Witness • The disciples “informed” John—passing on truth instead of keeping it private. • Their report strengthened a believer who was confined and discouraged. Application • Speak of God’s work to family, friends, small-group members (Acts 4:20). • Send encouragement to believers who feel “imprisoned” by illness, grief, or isolation (Hebrews 10:24-25). • Use testimony, not gossip—focus on what Christ has done, not opinions. Bringing Honest Questions to Jesus Immediately after hearing the report, John sent those same disciples to ask, “Are You the One who was to come?” (Luke 7:19). • They obeyed John’s request without delay. • They took doubts straight to the Lord, not to the crowd. Application • When questions arise, open Scripture and pray for clarity (James 1:5). • Seek answers directly from Christ—His Word, His Spirit, His people. • Model transparency; doubts voiced in faith become doors to deeper conviction (Mark 9:24). Serving as Faithful Messengers Luke points out no spotlight or applause for these disciples. Their role was to relay information faithfully. Application • Embrace behind-the-scenes service (1 Peter 4:10). • Measure success by obedience, not recognition (Colossians 3:23-24). • Remember that even unnamed messengers advance God’s plan (2 Kings 5:2-3). Encouraging Hope in Suffering John, a prophet, struggled during imprisonment. The disciples’ visit brought news of God’s power at work. Application • Visit, call, or write believers in hard places (Matthew 25:36). • Share specific reports of God’s faithfulness to lift weary hearts (Isaiah 40:31). • Point discouraged saints back to the Savior’s character and works. Living as Witnesses Today Luke 24:48—“You are witnesses of these things.” The pattern set in Luke 7 continues: 1. Observe Jesus’ work. 2. Believe and internalize what you see. 3. Report it faithfully to others. 4. Lead doubters to Christ for answers. When these steps mark our lives, we echo John’s disciples—quietly but powerfully guiding others to behold the Lamb of God and strengthening our own faith along the way. |
