How to emulate the Queen's giving in church?
How can we apply the Queen's example of giving in our church community?

Setting the Scene

“Then she gave the king 120 talents of gold, a great quantity of spices, and precious stones. Never again were so many spices brought in as those the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.” (1 Kings 10:10)

Observations from the Queen’s Gift

• Lavish generosity—120 talents of gold is roughly four tons.

• Thoughtful variety—spices and gems met different needs in Solomon’s court.

• One-time yet memorable—Scripture notes no later gift equaled it.

• Worship-motivated—she had come “to test Solomon with hard questions” (v. 1) and left convinced of God’s hand (vv. 6-9). Her giving expressed worship, not obligation.

Timeless Principles

• Godward focus: giving springs from recognizing God’s wisdom and blessing (v. 9).

• Sacrifice over surplus: her journey and gift both cost her.

• Quality matters: she offered the best of her resources (cf. Malachi 1:8).

• Influence through generosity: her offering became part of Israel’s testimony to the nations (1 Kings 10:23-24).

Practical Church Applications

1. Cultivate God-centered motivation

• Before pledges or budgets, remind one another why we give—“Love one another deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8).

• Share testimonies of how Christ’s work in us fuels generosity.

2. Encourage sacrificial, not token, giving

• Ask, “Does this gift affect my lifestyle?” (cf. Luke 21:3-4).

• Budget room for faith-stretching projects—missions, benevolence, church planting.

3. Offer diverse resources

• Finances—regular tithes and occasional large offerings when able (Proverbs 3:9-10).

• Skills—administration, craftsmanship, teaching (Romans 12:6-8).

• Goods—furniture for a single-mom apartment, groceries for the pantry (Acts 4:34-35).

4. Plan memorable moments of generosity

• Annual “Blessed to Bless” Sunday where the church brings a special collective offering.

• Milestone gifts—building debt retirement, launching a new campus, sending long-term missionaries.

5. Give with excellence

• Quality equipment for children’s ministry rather than hand-me-downs.

• Well-thought-out care packages instead of clearing expired pantry items.

Heart Check for Givers

• Is my giving rooted in gratitude for God’s wisdom and salvation?

• Does it reflect the excellence I attribute to Him?

• Am I willing for my generosity to inspire others toward God?

Encouragement to Continue

“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.” (2 Corinthians 9:6)

Let the Queen’s example move us to fresh, faith-filled giving that honors the King above every king and builds up His people.
