How to find God in uncertain times?
In what ways can we seek God's presence during times of uncertainty?

Setting the Scene—Jacob’s Night of Uncertainty

“ When he reached a certain place, he spent the night there because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones from that place, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep.” (Genesis 28:11)

Jacob is alone, on the run, and unsure of what tomorrow will bring. Yet in this ordinary, uncomfortable spot, God meets him. His experience offers a roadmap for anyone longing for God’s presence when life feels unsteady.

Pause and Make Room

• Jacob stopped for the night. We, too, can deliberately pause.

• Turn off distractions—phones, screens, endless news cycles.

Psalm 46:10: “Be still and know that I am God.” Stillness invites awareness of Him.

Rest Under God’s Sovereignty

• Jacob lay down on hard ground, but the Lord was already there.

Psalm 121:3–4 reminds us He “will not slumber.” Our rest declares trust that God keeps watch.

• Simple act: choose a set time to rest, surrendering the outcome of tomorrow to the One who never sleeps.

Recall and Hold Fast to His Promises

• Immediately after Genesis 28:11, God speaks promises of land, offspring, and His abiding presence (vv. 13–15).

Hebrews 13:5: “I will never leave you, nor will I forsake you.”

• Make a written list of God’s covenant promises in Scripture; read them aloud when doubts rise.

Respond in Worship

• Jacob later sets up the stone as a pillar and calls the place Bethel—“house of God” (v. 19).

• Worship reframes uncertainty, turning the very place of fear into memorial.

Psalm 34:1: “I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise will always be on my lips.”

Walk Forward in Obedience

• Jacob vows faithfulness and continues his journey (vv. 20–22).

James 1:22 urges: “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.”

• Obedience keeps us aligned with God’s presence; every step says, “I trust You.”

Practical Takeaways for Today

• Schedule daily quiet minutes—let them be non-negotiable.

• Keep a promise journal: note specific verses God highlights.

• Turn anxiety into worship—sing, speak, or write praise whenever fear surfaces.

• Act on the next clear step God has shown—big or small—confident He is already ahead.
