How can we seek God's guidance when "no signs" are evident today? The cry of Psalm 74:9: When signs vanish “‘There are no signs for us to see. There is no longer any prophet, and none of us knows how long this will last.’ ” (Psalm 74:9) Asaph mourns the silence of heaven. The temple lies in ruins, no prophetic voice rises, and God’s people feel abandoned. Our own seasons can feel the same—no clear sign, no audible answer, only silence. God still speaks: the sufficiency of Scripture • “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16–17) • The canon is closed, yet the Word remains “living and active” (Hebrews 4:12). • When visible signs cease, God directs us through His timeless, inerrant Word. Open it first, not last. Listening to the indwelling Spirit • Jesus promised, “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth.” (John 16:13) • Every believer has this Helper; He illuminates Scripture, convicts, and prompts. • His leading never contradicts the written Word. Walking by faith, not by sight • “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7) • Faith rests on God’s character, not on circumstances. • Absence of signs does not equal absence of God. Practical steps to seek guidance today 1. Saturate your mind with Scripture – Read, meditate, memorize. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105) 2. Pray for wisdom – “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God… and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5) 3. Obey what is already clear – Guidance follows obedience; light for the next step comes when we walk in the light we have. 4. Seek godly counsel – “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” (Proverbs 15:22) 5. Evaluate inner promptings by Scripture – The Spirit’s voice always harmonizes with God’s Word. 6. Watch for providential doors – God directs through circumstances (Acts 16:6–10). Moments of opening or closing align with His purpose. 7. Wait patiently – “Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for Him.” (Psalm 37:7) His timetable perfects our faith. 8. Trust God’s sovereignty – “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.” (Proverbs 16:9) Encouragement from other Scriptures • Isaiah 30:20–21: even in adversity, “your ears will hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it.’” • Proverbs 3:5–6: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart… He will make your paths straight.” • Romans 8:14: “All who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.” When signs seem absent, the Shepherd is still present—speaking through His Word, guiding by His Spirit, directing every step of the faithful who seek Him. |
