How to find our God-given role?
How can we discern our God-given role, as John did in John 1:21?

Framing John 1:21

“Then they asked him, ‘Then who are you? Are you Elijah?’ He said, ‘I am not.’ ‘Are you the Prophet?’ He answered, ‘No.’” (John 1:21)

John the Baptist stands before the religious delegation and refuses labels that God has not assigned. He will not present himself as Elijah reborn or “the Prophet” foretold by Moses (Deuteronomy 18:15). Instead, a few verses later, he anchors his identity in Scripture: “I am ‘the voice of one calling in the wilderness, “Make straight the way for the Lord,”’” (John 1:23, quoting Isaiah 40:3).

Why John’s Response Matters

• He models humility—knowing what he is and what he is not.

• He submits to Scripture—defining himself by God’s Word, not public opinion.

• He keeps Christ central—pointing away from self and toward “the Lamb of God” (John 1:29).

Principles for Discerning Our God-Given Role

1. Humble Self-Assessment

Romans 12:3 calls us to “think of yourself with sober judgment.”

• Like John, honestly acknowledge limitations; reject roles that seem grand but aren’t God’s assignment.

2. Scriptural Alignment

• Let God’s Word reveal purpose (Psalm 119:105).

• Trace how biblical figures were guided by specific passages (e.g., Jesus in Luke 4:17-21).

3. Prayerful Listening

• John was filled with the Spirit even before birth (Luke 1:15); the Spirit still guides (John 16:13).

• Regular time in prayer tunes the heart to God’s direction (Jeremiah 33:3).

4. Confirming Voices

• Counsel from mature believers affirms calling (Proverbs 15:22; Acts 13:2-3).

• fruit of obedience—peace, joy, effectiveness—confirms God’s leading (Colossians 3:15).

5. Christ-Centered Focus

• John’s role existed to exalt Jesus (John 3:30).

• Any true calling ultimately magnifies Christ, not self (2 Corinthians 4:5).

Practical Steps to Apply Today

• List roles you currently fill; prayerfully surrender each to the Lord.

• Identify Scriptures that resonate with your gifts and burdens; write them where you’ll see them daily.

• Ask two trusted believers to speak into your perceived calling.

• Step out in small acts of obedience; watch where God brings fruit.

• Regularly revisit and refine your sense of calling in light of Scripture and the Spirit’s prompting.

Promises for Those Who Walk in Their Calling

• “He who calls you is faithful, and He will do it.” (1 Thessalonians 5:24)

• “Now may the God of peace… equip you with every good thing to do His will.” (Hebrews 13:20-21)

• “We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand.” (Ephesians 2:10)

Common Obstacles and How to Overcome

• Fear of inadequacy—remember God delights in using the humble (1 Corinthians 1:26-29).

• Comparison—fix eyes on Jesus, not on others’ assignments (John 21:22).

• Impatience—God’s timing refines character (James 1:4).

Living Out Your God-Given Role

Like John, refuse to wear titles that aren’t yours, ground identity in Scripture, and keep pointing hearts to Christ. As you listen, obey, and trust His Word, you will discern and fulfill the unique role the Lord has prepared for you.
