1 Thessalonians 5
1. He proceeds in the description of Christ's coming to judgment;
16. and gives various instructions;
23. and so concludes the epistle.

The One who calls you
This phrase emphasizes the divine initiative in the calling of believers. In the context of 1 Thessalonians, Paul is addressing a church that he founded during his second missionary journey (Acts 17:1-9). The calling here refers to God's invitation to salvation and sanctification. This aligns with other scriptures such as Romans 8:30, where those whom God predestines, He also calls. The calling is not based on human merit but on God's sovereign will and grace. It reflects the personal nature of God's relationship with His people, as seen in the calling of individuals like Abraham (Genesis 12:1) and the prophets (Jeremiah 1:5).

is faithful
God's faithfulness is a central theme throughout the Bible, underscoring His reliability and trustworthiness. In the Old Testament, God's faithfulness is often linked to His covenant promises, as seen in Deuteronomy 7:9, where He is described as the faithful God who keeps His covenant. In the New Testament, this faithfulness is manifested in the fulfillment of His promises through Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20). The assurance of God's faithfulness provides comfort and confidence to believers, knowing that He will fulfill His promises, including the promise of eternal life (1 John 2:25).

and He will do it
This phrase assures believers of God's active role in their sanctification and ultimate glorification. It echoes Philippians 1:6, where Paul expresses confidence that He who began a good work in believers will carry it on to completion. The "it" refers to the work of sanctification and the fulfillment of God's purposes in the lives of believers. This assurance is rooted in God's omnipotence and His commitment to His people. It also connects to the eschatological hope found in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, where believers are promised resurrection and eternal life with Christ. This promise is not dependent on human effort but on God's power and faithfulness.

Teaching Points
God's Faithfulness in Calling
Recognize that God initiates the call to salvation and is committed to seeing it through. This assurance should bring comfort and confidence in our spiritual journey.

Trust in God's Promises
Reflect on the reliability of God's promises. Just as He is faithful, we are called to trust Him fully, knowing He will accomplish His purposes in our lives.

Perseverance in Faith
In times of doubt or difficulty, remember that God's faithfulness is unwavering. This truth should encourage us to persevere in our faith, relying on His strength.

Active Participation in God's Work
While God is faithful to complete His work, we are invited to actively participate in His plans through obedience and faithfulness in our daily lives.

Encouragement in Community
Share the assurance of God's faithfulness with others in your community. Encourage fellow believers by reminding them of God's steadfast commitment to His promises.(24) Faithful is he.--A reason for hoping confidently that they will be blamelessly preserved. God would forfeit His character for keeping His promise, if He "called," and did not enable men to obey the call. Of course He can only "do it" in case they continue willing to have it done. On the present tense, see Note on 1Thessalonians 2:12.

Verse 24. - Faithful is he that calleth you. Paul knows that he does not beseech God in vain. He who calls you to the Christian faith is faithful to fulfill his promises. God's calling is the commencement of a series which terminates in glorification (Romans 8:30). A similar appeal to the faithfulness of God is elsewhere made by the apostle (1 Corinthians 1:9; 2 Thessalonians 3:3). Who also will do it; namely, will preserve you blameless unto the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.
