How can we seek peace when surrounded by those who hate it? The Cry at Hand: Psalm 120:6 “Too long have I dwelt among those who hate peace.” Recognizing the Reality of Hostility • Scripture speaks factually: some people simply “hate peace.” • Hostility can be verbal, relational, cultural, even spiritual (John 15:18–19). • Admitting the tension keeps us from naïve optimism while driving us toward God’s remedy. Remembering the Source of Peace • Peace is a Person—Jesus “Himself is our peace” (Ephesians 2:14). • He gifts peace that the world cannot steal (John 14:27). • Lasting peace flows first from reconciliation with God (Romans 5:1). Responding with God-Given Steps 1. Seek personal holiness. • “Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.” (Psalm 34:14) 2. Guard your tongue. • “A gentle answer turns away wrath.” (Proverbs 15:1) 3. Aim for peace, but not at any price. • “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” (Romans 12:18) 4. Keep praying. • “Do not be anxious about anything… present your requests to God. And the peace of God… will guard your hearts.” (Philippians 4:6-7) 5. Bless your enemies. • “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you.” (Luke 6:27) 6. Stay in fellowship. • “Iron sharpens iron.” (Proverbs 27:17) We need believers who remind us of truth when pressure mounts. Rooting Yourself in Promises • Isaiah 26:3 — God “will keep in perfect peace the steadfast mind.” • Psalm 119:165 — “Abundant peace belongs to those who love Your law; nothing can make them stumble.” • 2 Thessalonians 3:16 — “May the Lord of peace Himself give you peace at all times and in every way.” Reflecting Christ in a World That Hates Peace • Our calm confidence testifies that Christ is alive. • Peaceful living exposes the bankruptcy of hatred. • Consistency matters: keep pursuing peace whether or not others respond. • The day is coming when the Prince of Peace will reign openly (Isaiah 9:6–7); our present pursuit hints at that future. When surrounded by those who hate peace, we cling to the One who is peace, walk in holiness, speak with grace, and stand on unshakable promises. |
