How to fortify existing faith?
What does it mean to "strengthen what remains" in our faith journey?

Wake Up: The Context of Revelation 3:2

“Wake up and strengthen what remains, which was about to die; for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of My God.”

• Sardis looked alive but was spiritually drowsy.

• The Lord sees “unfinished” works—faith once vibrant now coasting.

• The call is urgent: what little life is left must be reinforced before it dies.

Spotting What Still Lives

• A lingering desire to pray, though sporadic.

• A half-hearted ministry involvement that once thrilled you.

• Tiny embers of conviction when you hear Scripture.

• A memory of past joy in Christ that still stirs the heart.

Identifying these flickers is step one; you cannot strengthen what you refuse to notice.

Why Letting Faith Fade Is Dangerous

Matthew 24:12—“Because of the multiplication of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold.” Cold love leaves believers ineffective.

1 Timothy 1:19—Shipwreck comes when faith and a good conscience are neglected.

Hebrews 2:1—“We must pay closer attention… so that we do not drift away.” Drifting is subtle, not sudden.

Practical Ways to Strengthen What Remains

1. Re-engage the Word

Psalm 19:7—God’s Word “revives the soul.”

– Set a fixed, guarded time; even ten focused minutes can fan embers.

2. Stoke Prayer Life

– Jude 20—“build yourselves up… praying in the Holy Spirit.”

– Pray Scripture back to God; it keeps prayer anchored and lively.

3. Restore Fellowship

Hebrews 10:24-25—meet together “all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

– Seek believers who will ask, “How’s your walk?” and listen for the answer.

4. Remember and Repent

Revelation 3:3—“Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent.”

– List moments when God acted powerfully in your life; thank Him, confess the drift, choose obedience anew.

5. Re-deploy Gifts

2 Timothy 1:6—“fan into flame the gift of God.”

– Serve in even small ways; obedience warms the heart.

Encouraging Examples from Scripture

• Peter—Luke 22:32: Jesus prayed Peter’s faith would not fail; Peter returned and “strengthened” his brothers.

• Ephesus—Revelation 2:5: called to “do the works you did at first.” They still had works to revive.

• Timothy—2 Timothy 4:11: Mark, once unprofitable, became “useful… for ministry” after recommitment.

The Promise That Fuels Perseverance

Revelation 3:5—“The one who overcomes will be clothed in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the Book of Life.”

Isaiah 42:3—“A bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not extinguish.” The Lord cherishes even weak faith and delights to strengthen it.

Strengthening what remains is not merely survival; it is revival. Identify the embers, apply Scripture, prayer, fellowship, repentance, and service—and watch the Spirit breathe new life into what seemed nearly gone.
