How to give honest answers daily?
How can we practice giving "an honest answer" in our daily conversations?

A Sweet Kiss of Truth

“An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips.” (Proverbs 24:26)

In Solomon’s day a kiss on the lips expressed loyalty, affection, and covenant faithfulness. In the same way, truthful words communicate respect and sincere love for the one who hears them.

Why Honest Speech Matters

• God’s own nature is truth (John 14:6; Titus 1:2).

• His Word is flawless (Psalm 12:6) and our standard (John 17:17).

• Lying aligns with the devil, “the father of lies” (John 8:44).

• Truthful speech strengthens relationships—“we are members of one another” (Ephesians 4:25).

• Integrity attracts God’s blessing (Psalm 15:1–2).

Daily Practices That Guard Truthfulness

1. Decide beforehand to tell the truth

– Let your “Yes” be yes and your “No,” no (Matthew 5:37).

2. Train honesty in the small things

– “He who is faithful with very little will also be faithful with much” (Luke 16:10).

3. Speak the truth in love

– Match accurate words with gracious tone (Ephesians 4:15; Colossians 4:6).

4. Refuse half-truths, exaggeration, or flattery

– “A flattering mouth causes ruin” (Proverbs 26:28).

5. Listen carefully before answering

– “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak” (James 1:19).

6. Check motive: aim to build, not to wound

– “The tongue of the wise brings healing” (Proverbs 12:18).

7. Keep promises promptly

– “The righteous man keeps an oath even when it hurts” (Psalm 15:4).

8. Confess and correct quickly when you misspeak

– “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive” (1 John 1:9).

9. Saturate your mind with Scripture

– A heart full of truth overflows with truthful words (Luke 6:45).

10. Invite accountability

– “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17).

Recognizing the Rewards

• Peace of conscience (Proverbs 10:9).

• Greater credibility and influence (Proverbs 22:1).

• Deeper fellowship with God and people (1 John 1:7).

• Protection from the snares of deceit (Proverbs 19:5).

Putting It into Practice Today

• Before speaking, ask: “Is it factual? Is it loving? Is it necessary now?”

• If tempted to shade the truth, recall Proverbs 24:26 and visualize the clean, affectionate “kiss” an honest answer brings.

• End the day with a brief review: Were my words true? Where do I need to seek forgiveness or clarification tomorrow?

As lips meet in a genuine kiss, so hearts meet through honest words. Choose truth; give the gift that Scripture likens to a sweet, welcome embrace.
