How to honor lesser-known church figures?
How can we apply the recognition of lesser-known figures in our church community?

Setting the Scene

“ Hurai from the ravines of Gaash, Abiel the Arbathite, Azmaveth the Baharumite, Eliahba the Shaalbonite ” (1 Chronicles 11:32).

They stand in Scripture among David’s mighty men—yet most believers can’t recall their exploits. God, however, recorded their names forever.

Why Lesser-Known Names Matter

• God values every obedient servant, not just those in the spotlight.

• Scripture’s genealogies and lists teach that obscurity on earth is not obscurity to heaven (cf. Hebrews 6:10).

• The body analogy—“ the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable ” (1 Corinthians 12:22-25)—shows honor is deliberately redistributed to prevent division.

Spotting the Unsung Heroes Around Us

Look for:

• The member who sets up chairs before anyone arrives.

• The senior saint who prays through the directory daily.

• The teen running livestream slides without complaint.

• The giver who slips an envelope into the benevolence box.

Practical Ways to Honor Them

1. Private Appreciation

– A handwritten note citing a specific act of service (Proverbs 3:27).

– A quiet word of thanks after the gathering; “ Whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My name… ” (Mark 9:41).

2. Public Affirmation

– Brief testimonies during worship highlighting background ministries.

– Mention volunteers’ names in newsletters or bulletins, as Scripture records David’s warriors.

3. Shared Ministry

– Pair newer believers with these faithful laborers; let imitation happen (Philippians 3:17).

– Rotate visible roles so hidden servants sometimes step forward and visible leaders taste obscurity.

4. Tangible Support

– Budget line for those who incur personal costs serving (Galatians 6:6).

– Offer time off or extra help during demanding seasons.

Cultivating a Culture of Honor

• Teach regularly that every gift matters (Romans 12:4-8).

• Celebrate faithfulness over flashiness; longevity over novelty.

• Refuse gossip that elevates some by diminishing others (Ephesians 4:29).

Scriptures to Keep in View

1 Peter 4:10-11 — each steward serves “ so that in all things God may be glorified.”

Colossians 3:23-24 — “ It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

Hebrews 6:10 — “ God is not unjust; He will not forget your work.”

Living It Out This Week

• Identify one “Hurai” in your congregation.

• Thank them specifically and intentionally.

• Share their story (with permission) to encourage the body and magnify the One who sees in secret.
