How to inspire others to follow God?
How can we encourage others to follow God’s commands as in Joshua 1:18?

Anchoring in Joshua 1:18

“Anyone who rebels against your order and does not obey your words in all that you command him will be put to death. Only be strong and courageous.” (Joshua 1:18)

God’s people pledged wholehearted obedience to Joshua, echoing the charge God had already given him (Joshua 1:6-7). Their words reveal two essentials for fostering obedience in others: unwavering seriousness about God’s commands and bold, encouraging leadership.

Why Our Encouragement Matters

• God’s commands are not suggestions; they are literal, life-shaping truths (Psalm 119:89).

• Obedience is love in action: “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” (John 14:15)

• We bear one another’s burdens, stirring each other “to love and good deeds.” (Hebrews 10:24-25)

Practical Ways to Encourage Obedience

• Model consistency

– Live what you teach (1 Corinthians 11:1).

– Share personal testimonies of God’s faithfulness when you obey.

• Speak the Word often

– Keep Scripture on your lips and in your home (Deuteronomy 6:6-9).

– Text or post verses that align with daily challenges.

• Affirm God’s promises and warnings

– Blessing follows obedience (Joshua 1:8; Psalm 1:1-3).

– Consequences are real (Galatians 6:7-8).

• Offer courageous encouragement

– Use words that build resolve: “God is with you—be bold!” (Joshua 1:9).

– Celebrate small steps of faithfulness publicly.

• Create accountability structures

– Pair up for weekly check-ins.

– Form small groups devoted to applying the Word.

• Pray Scripture over one another (Colossians 1:9-10).

• Equip with truth

– Provide resources: Bible reading plans, doctrinal studies, trusted sermons.

– Remind that “All Scripture is God-breathed and useful…” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Strengthened by Courageous Leadership

Joshua’s confidence inspired Israel. Today:

• Parents set the tone in their homes (Ephesians 6:4).

• Church leaders shepherd by example (1 Peter 5:2-3).

• Every believer can echo, “Be strong and courageous,” whenever fellow disciples waver.

Living It Out Together

• Stand firm on the literal truth of Scripture.

• Speak courage into one another.

• Walk in visible, joyful obedience.

As we do, we invite others to follow God’s commands with the same wholehearted devotion proclaimed in Joshua 1:18.

Why is courage essential for leaders in fulfilling God's mission today?
