How to joyfully seek God's kingdom?
How can we joyfully pursue God's kingdom as the man did in Matthew 13:44?

Discovering the Hidden Treasure

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid again; and in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” Matthew 13:44

The man’s encounter with the hidden treasure shows three realities:

• Discovery—the kingdom is revealed to hearts prepared by God (Matthew 16:17)

• Delight—joy springs up the moment its value is recognized (Psalm 16:11)

• Decision—everything else becomes expendable compared with possessing the treasure (Philippians 3:7-8)

Recognizing the Surpassing Worth

Matthew 6:33: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Psalm 119:162: “I rejoice in Your promise like one who has found great spoil.”

Colossians 1:13-14: the Kingdom means rescue, redemption, and forgiveness.

Knowing the Kingdom’s worth fuels a joy that gladly lays lesser things aside.

Wholehearted Surrender that Springs from Joy

The man “sells all that he has.” Joyful surrender is never reluctant.

Luke 14:33 affirms that none can be Christ’s disciple without giving up ownership of all.

Romans 12:1 presents life as a living sacrifice—holy and pleasing to God.

Hebrews 12:1-2 shows Jesus Himself, “who for the joy set before Him endured the cross,” modeling joyful sacrifice.

Joy makes costly obedience light, because hearts are captured by something better.

Practical Ways to Pursue the Kingdom Joyfully

Daily mindset

• Start each morning rehearsing the gospel promises that belong to Kingdom citizens (Ephesians 1:3-14).

• Set your heart on things above, not on earthly things (Colossians 3:1-2).

Stewardship choices

• Budget, calendar, and relationships align with Kingdom priorities.

• Give generously and secretly, storing treasure in heaven (Matthew 6:19-21).

Whole-life obedience

• Obey Christ’s commands promptly; joy follows faithfulness (John 15:10-11).

• Serve in the church, knowing labor in the Lord is never in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58).

Gospel witness

• Share the treasure found; the Kingdom advances as others see our joy (1 Peter 3:15-16).

Guarding Joy on the Journey

• Abide in Christ through Scripture and prayer—His words ignite and sustain joy (John 15:7).

• Walk in the Spirit; He produces joy as fruit (Galatians 5:22-23).

• Count present trials “light and momentary” compared with eternal glory (2 Corinthians 4:17-18).

• Gather with believers; corporate worship renews Kingdom perspective (Hebrews 10:24-25).

Encouragement from Faithful Examples

• Moses considered “the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt” (Hebrews 11:26).

• The early believers “accepted the confiscation of their property with joy” because they knew they had “a better and permanent possession” (Hebrews 10:34).

• Paul, imprisoned, could still rejoice because “to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21).

By valuing the Kingdom above every earthly pursuit, surrendering all with glad hearts, and walking daily in Spirit-empowered obedience, believers follow the pattern of the man in Matthew 13:44 and experience the deep, enduring joy that comes from possessing the greatest treasure of all.
