How to keep integrity like Joseph?
What steps can we take to maintain integrity in challenging environments like Joseph?

Seeing Integrity Through the Lens of Genesis 39:6

“Thus he left everything he owned in Joseph’s charge; and with him there he paid attention to nothing except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome.” – Genesis 39:6

Why this verse matters

Potiphar trusted Joseph so completely that he stopped “paying attention to anything.” Integrity built that trust; integrity also sustained Joseph when temptation arrived in the very next verse. How do we follow his example?

Anchor Your Identity in God’s Presence

Genesis 39:2 – “The LORD was with Joseph.”

• Remember that God’s nearness is literal, not poetic.

• Confidence in His presence produces courage to resist compromise (Psalm 16:8).

Own the Responsibility God Gives You

• Joseph managed “everything” Potiphar possessed.

• Work “with all your heart, as working for the Lord” (Colossians 3:23).

• Excellence at small tasks strengthens character for larger tests (Luke 16:10).

Guard Your Heart Early and Often

• Joseph’s physical attractiveness (v. 6) sets the stage for temptation.

Proverbs 4:23 – “Guard your heart above all else, for it is the source of life.”

• Monitor what you watch, read, and ponder; small compromises open doors to larger failures.

Establish Clear Moral Boundaries

• Joseph refused Potiphar’s wife daily (Genesis 39:10).

1 Corinthians 6:18 – “Flee from sexual immorality.”

• Decide in advance where you will not go, what you will not view, and with whom you will not be alone.

Run, Don’t Negotiate

Genesis 39:12 – “He left his garment in her hand and ran outside.”

• Moving your feet can save your soul; retreat is sometimes the most courageous act.

2 Timothy 2:22 – “Flee youthful passions, and pursue righteousness.”

Keep God’s Perspective on Sin

Genesis 39:9 – “How then could I do this great evil, and sin against God?”

• Joseph viewed adultery first as an offense against the Lord, not merely against Potiphar.

• A vertical view of sin fortifies us more than horizontal consequences alone.

Accept Unjust Consequences Without Compromise

• Joseph’s integrity landed him in prison (Genesis 39:20).

1 Peter 2:19 – Enduring unjust suffering “is commendable before God.”

• Faithfulness is measured by obedience, not immediate outcomes.

Trust God’s Timing for Vindication

Psalm 105:19 – “Until the time his word came to pass, the word of the LORD tested him.”

• God used prison to position Joseph for Pharaoh’s palace; He still weaves adversity into destiny.

Invite Accountable Relationships

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 – Two are better than one.

• Seek believers who will ask hard questions and celebrate right choices.

Live for a Legacy, Not the Moment

• Joseph’s eventual influence saved nations (Genesis 50:20).

Romans 12:2 – Transformation today shapes testimony tomorrow.
