How to make room for God today?
How can we create a "small room" for God in our lives today?

Inviting God into Every Day: The Message of 2 Kings 4:10

“Please let us make a small room upstairs and put in it a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp for him. Then he can stay there whenever he comes to us.” (2 Kings 4:10)

The Shunammite woman’s simple addition created space for God’s prophet—and, by extension, for God’s presence and blessing. That physical room models the inner “room” we can offer the Lord today.

Why the Small Room Matters

• It was intentional, not accidental.

• It was furnished—prepared for ongoing use.

• It was reserved exclusively for the man of God.

• It became the setting for miracles (vv. 15–37).

Translating the Room into Modern Life

• God still looks for prepared hearts (Isaiah 57:15).

• Jesus knocks, waiting to be welcomed inside (Revelation 3:20).

• Secret communion is commended by Christ (Matthew 6:6).

Practical Steps to Build Your Own “Small Room”

1. Set Apart Time

– Schedule an unmovable daily appointment with the Lord.

– Follow Jesus’ pattern: “Early in the morning... He went out to a solitary place” (Mark 1:35).

2. Create a Physical Corner (if possible)

– A chair by a window, a cleared desk, or a literal spare room can become sacred ground.

– Keep a Bible, journal, and pen there to signal purpose.

3. Establish Rhythms

– Begin with Scripture reading (Psalm 119:105).

– Respond in prayer and worship (Psalm 62:1).

– Listen in silence, giving God space to speak (1 Kings 19:12).

4. Guard the Boundaries

– Turn off devices or place them outside the area.

– Inform family members of your set time to minimize interruptions.

– Treat cancellations as exceptions, not norms.

Furnishings of the Heart (Mirroring 2 Kings 4:10)

• Bed—Rest: Cease striving; receive His peace (Matthew 11:28–29).

• Table—Fellowship: Share your day and needs; thank Him for His provision (Psalm 23:5).

• Chair—Submission: Sit to learn and obey, like Mary at Jesus’ feet (Luke 10:39).

• Lamp—Revelation: Let His Word and Spirit illuminate next steps (Psalm 119:105; John 16:13).

Living Out the Room

• Carry its atmosphere into work, school, and relationships.

• Revisit mini-moments throughout the day—brief prayers, verse recollection, gratitude pauses.

• When decisions arise, retreat inwardly to the “chair” of submission before acting.

Fruit to Expect

• Deeper intimacy with Christ (John 15:4–5).

• Renewed mind and transformed life (Romans 12:1–2).

• Readiness to host God’s miracles in ordinary settings, just as the Shunammite home did.

Dedicate the space, furnish it well, and watch the Lord fill your “small room” with His abiding presence and power.
