How to persist in faith amid rebuke?
How can we persist in faith when others "rebuked him to be silent"?

Seeing the Moment in Luke 18:39

“Those who led the way admonished him to be silent, but he cried out all the louder, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’” (Luke 18:39)

Why the Crowd Tries to Quiet Us

• They think they are protecting propriety or order (John 9:24–34).

• They do not recognize Jesus’ willingness to stop for “insignificant” voices (Luke 18:15–17).

• They are uncomfortable with desperate, wholehearted faith.

Learning from the Blind Man’s Response

• He refuses to negotiate his need—he cries “all the louder.”

• His plea is specific: “Son of David” acknowledges Jesus as Messiah (2 Samuel 7:12–13).

• He trusts Jesus’ compassion more than he fears human disapproval (Psalm 118:6).

Grounding Our Persistence in God’s Character

• God welcomes persistence: “Everyone who asks receives” (Luke 11:10).

• His promises are irrevocable (Romans 11:29).

• “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2).

Practical Steps to Keep Crying Out

• Speak Scripture aloud when opposition rises—“The LORD is my helper; I will not be afraid” (Hebrews 13:6).

• Surround yourself with faith-filled companions who encourage, not silence (Hebrews 10:24–25).

• Recall past deliverances; testimony fuels courage (1 Samuel 17:37).

• Stay where grace is found—regular worship, Bible reading, and communion with Christ (John 15:4–7).

• When resistance intensifies, turn up the volume of praise (Acts 16:25–26).

What Persistent Faith Produces

• Jesus stops and responds (Luke 18:40–43).

• Others witness God’s power—“all the people… gave praise to God” (v. 43).

• Trials forge endurance that matures our character (James 1:2–4).

• We gain deeper intimacy with the Savior who hears the persistent cry.

Guarding Our Own Tongues

• Refuse to become part of the silencing crowd (1 Thessalonians 5:11).

• Use words to lift weary saints, reminding them, “Take heart; He is calling you” (Mark 10:49).

Holding the Line

When voices around us say, “Be quiet,” faith answers, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” and cries out yet more loudly until He answers—because He always does.
