What steps can we take to guard against deception in our community? Recognize the Reality of Deception “Many deceivers have gone out into the world—those who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.” (2 John 1:7) • Accept that deception is not hypothetical; it is active and personal. • Stay alert: Jesus Himself warned, “Beware of false prophets” (Matthew 7:15). Know the Truth Deeply • Daily reading and memorizing Scripture anchors the heart (Psalm 119:11). • “All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable… so that the man of God may be complete” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). • When we know the genuine article, counterfeits stand out. Test Every Message • “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits” (1 John 4:1). • Ask: Does this teaching exalt Christ as fully God and fully man? Does it align with the whole counsel of God? • Compare sermons, books, and social media content with Scripture like the Bereans did (Acts 17:11). Honor Scriptural Boundaries • Guard fellowship: “Do not receive him into your home or welcome him” when someone brings a teaching that denies Christ (2 John 1:10). • Protect pulpits, study groups, and leadership roles from unbiblical influences (Titus 1:9). Walk in Accountability • Meet regularly with mature believers who can speak truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). • Invite correction; “iron sharpens iron” (Proverbs 27:17). • Keep short accounts with sin so the enemy gains no foothold (Ephesians 4:27). Cultivate Discernment through the Spirit • Pray for wisdom; God “gives generously” (James 1:5). • Depend on the Spirit who “will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13). • Discern not only words but also fruit: sound doctrine produces Christ-like character (Galatians 5:22-23). Hold Fast to Christ-Centered Teaching • Keep the gospel central: “Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2). • Celebrate orthodox creeds and confessions that summarize biblical truth. • Teach the next generation diligently (Deuteronomy 6:6-7). Encourage and Restore Gently • When deception surfaces, confront with grace and clarity (Galatians 6:1). • Restore the wandering with patience, knowing the Good Shepherd pursues His sheep (James 5:19-20). |
