How to prevent division, per Acts 21:22?
What steps can we take to prevent division, inspired by Acts 21:22?

Setting the Scene

“ What then? They will certainly hear that you have come.” – Acts 21:22

The Jerusalem elders knew rumors about Paul could fracture the young church. Their response to the looming tension gives us a pattern for guarding unity today.

What Fuels Division

• Misinformation and unchecked rumors (Acts 21:20–24)

• Cultural or personal preferences elevated above gospel essentials (Galatians 2:11-14)

• Pride and self-seeking attitudes (James 3:16)

Seven Steps to Prevent Division

1. Identify Potential Flashpoints Early

• The elders immediately acknowledged, “They will certainly hear.”

• Address issues before they spread (Proverbs 27:12).

2. Seek Wise, Spiritual Counsel

• Paul listened to mature leaders in Jerusalem (Acts 21:23-24).

• “Where there is no guidance, a people falls” (Proverbs 11:14).

3. Communicate Transparently and Factually

• Paul’s public actions refuted false claims.

• “Speak truth each one to his neighbor” (Ephesians 4:25).

4. Show Humble Flexibility Without Compromising Truth

• Paul joined a purification rite, not because the Law saved, but to remove needless offense (1 Corinthians 9:19-23).

• “Do nothing out of selfish ambition… in humility consider others more important than yourselves” (Philippians 2:3).

5. Display Visible Acts of Unity

• Paul paid the sacrifices for four men; unity was seen, not just discussed.

• “Make every effort to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:3).

6. Keep the Focus on the Core Gospel Message

• The elders affirmed God’s work among Gentiles (Acts 21:19-20).

• “I appeal to you… that all of you agree together, so that there may be no divisions” (1 Corinthians 1:10).

7. Pursue Peace and Mutual Edification Continually

• “So then, let us pursue what leads to peace and to mutual edification” (Romans 14:19).

• Daily choices either build bridges or walls.

Living It Out Today

• Listen carefully before reacting; clarify facts.

• Invite trusted believers to speak into tense situations.

• Choose words and actions that highlight Christ’s work rather than personal agendas.

• Celebrate testimonies of grace across cultures and backgrounds.

The Ultimate Goal

“I in them and You in Me—that they may be perfected in unity” (John 17:23). Protecting harmony in Christ’s body is not optional; it is a testimony to the watching world that the gospel is true.

How can we address rumors within our church community, as seen in Acts 21:22?
