How to prevent misinformation spread?
What steps can we take to avoid spreading misinformation in our communities?

Setting the Scene in Mark 14:59

“But even their testimony was inconsistent.” (Mark 14:59)

False witnesses tried to condemn Jesus, yet their stories did not line up. God highlights their inconsistency to show how destructive unreliable words can be.

Why Misinformation Matters to God

• Every word of Scripture is true, so God expects our words to reflect His truth (Psalm 119:160).

• Bearing false witness breaks the ninth commandment (Exodus 20:16).

• Lies fracture trust, damage reputations, and oppose the nature of the God who “cannot lie” (Titus 1:2).

Practical Steps for Truthful Communication

• Verify before you amplify

– Check original sources; do not rely on summaries or headlines (Proverbs 18:13).

– Ask, “Can I confirm this with at least two reliable witnesses?” (Deuteronomy 19:15).

• Slow your speech

– Pause and pray before repeating a story (James 1:19).

– Refuse to pass along half-heard rumors; silence can honor Christ more than speech.

• Speak the whole truth, not selective truth

– Omit nothing essential, add nothing uncertain (Ephesians 4:25).

– If you discover you shared something inaccurate, correct it promptly (Proverbs 28:13).

• Guard your digital testimony

– Fact-check links and images before posting.

– Use the “Philippians 4:8 filter”: is it true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable?

• Practice accountability

– Invite trusted believers to challenge you when your words drift from accuracy (Proverbs 27:6).

– Model humility by receiving correction without defensiveness.

Verses to Anchor Our Actions

Proverbs 19:5 – “A false witness will not go unpunished, and one who utters lies will not escape.”

Proverbs 12:17 – “He who speaks the truth declares what is right, but a false witness speaks deceit.”

James 3:5-6 – “Consider how small a spark sets a great forest ablaze… The tongue also is a fire…”

Philippians 4:8 – “…whatever is true… think on these things.”

Walking It Out in Daily Life

Truth-telling is worship. By checking facts, slowing down, and correcting mistakes, we echo the reliability of our Lord. When our communities hear consistent, accurate words from us, they glimpse the character of the God whose testimony never contradicts itself.
