How to protect hearts from enticements?
How can we guard our hearts against the enticements described in Proverbs 7:17?

Setting the Scene

“I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.” (Proverbs 7:17)

The adulterous woman’s fragrant bed is more than pleasant imagery—it is a lure. She packages sin in luxury, masking its poison with sweet spice. Recognizing that tactic is the first step in guarding the heart.

Identify the Enticements

• Sensual appeal—sin marketed through the senses (sight, smell, touch).

• False promises—“stolen water is sweet” (Proverbs 9:17).

• Immediate gratification—pleasure now, consequences later (Proverbs 7:22-23).

• Secrecy—“Come, let us take our fill… until morning” (Proverbs 7:18), away from accountability.

Guarding Our Hearts

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23)

1. Fill the Heart with Truth

• Daily Scripture intake: Psalm 119:11—“I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You.”

• Memorize passages that expose lust’s lie (1 Corinthians 6:18-20; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5).

2. Starve the Allure

Romans 13:14—“Clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the desires of the flesh.”

• Eliminate movies, music, and online content that perfume sin.

• Replace with edifying inputs—Philippians 4:8.

3. Cultivate Holy Desires

• Delight in the LORD (Psalm 37:4).

• Practice regular worship and thanksgiving; when the soul is satisfied in God, cheap substitutes lose flavor.

• Fast occasionally to train appetites to submit to the Spirit (Galatians 5:16).

4. Run, Don’t Reason

2 Timothy 2:22—“Flee from youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace.”

• Joseph didn’t negotiate; he bolted (Genesis 39:12). Sometimes the most spiritual answer is the quickest exit.

5. Build Accountable Relationships

• “Two are better than one… if either falls, the other can lift him up” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10).

• Give a trusted believer permission to ask hard questions.

• Use accountability software or agreed-upon check-ins.

6. Guard the Senses

Job 31:1—“I have made a covenant with my eyes.”

• Set screen-time limits, avoid late-night scrolling, keep devices in public spaces.

• Train your nose and palate too—identify what “smells” like temptation and walk away.

7. Pray for Discernment and Strength

• Although human discipline matters, victory is Spirit-powered: Ephesians 6:10-18.

• Ask daily for wisdom (James 1:5) and filling (Ephesians 5:18).

Living the Contrast

The perfumed bed promises spice and thrill but ends in “the chambers of death” (Proverbs 7:27). God’s design for intimacy—faithful marriage—offers lasting joy, safety, and His blessing (Hebrews 13:4). Guarding the heart is not merely defensive; it preserves the capacity to enjoy God’s best without regret.

Encouragement to Persevere

Victory is possible: “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful…” (1 Corinthians 10:13). Keep watch, stay in truth, lean on the Spirit, and the fleeting fragrance of sin will never overpower the enduring aroma of Christ (2 Corinthians 2:15).
