How to ready hearts for God's wrath?
In what ways can we prepare our hearts for God's "indignation"?

Key Verse – Nahum 1:6

“Who can withstand His indignation? Who can endure His burning anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are shattered before Him.”

Why God’s Indignation Deserves Our Attention

• His indignation is real, personal, and inevitable for unrepentant sin (Romans 1:18).

• Because God is perfectly holy, He must deal with evil (Habakkuk 1:13).

• Yet He delights to show mercy to those who take refuge in Him (Nahum 1:7).

Preparing Our Hearts – Foundational Attitudes

• Humility: “This is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, who trembles at My word” (Isaiah 66:2).

• Honest repentance: “He who conceals his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them will find mercy” (Proverbs 28:13).

• Faith in Christ: “Since we have now been justified by His blood, how much more shall we be saved from wrath through Him!” (Romans 5:9).

• Holy fear: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7).

Daily Practices That Shape a Ready Heart

• Turn from sin quickly

– “Repent therefore and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped away” (Acts 3:19).

• Cling to Scripture

– “Humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save your souls” (James 1:21).

– “All Scripture is God-breathed… for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).

• Obey, don’t merely profess

– “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter… but only he who does the will of My Father” (Matthew 7:21).

– “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments” (John 14:15).

• Pursue practical holiness

– “Pursue peace with everyone, as well as holiness, without which no one will see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14).

– “Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives” (2 Peter 3:11-12).

• Cultivate watchfulness and hope

– “Prepare your minds for action, be sober-minded, and set your hope fully on the grace to be given you” (1 Peter 1:13).

– “The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear-minded and sober” (1 Peter 4:7).

• Stay in fellowship

– “Let us consider how to spur one another on… not neglecting meeting together” (Hebrews 10:24-25).

Marks of a Heart that Is Ready

• Quick to confess, slow to justify self (1 John 1:9).

• Hungry for God’s Word and eager to obey.

• Growing love for righteousness and hatred for sin (Psalm 97:10).

• Persistent gratitude for the cross (Romans 5:8).

• Peaceful confidence rather than dread about the future (Isaiah 26:3).

• Active mercy and justice toward others (Micah 6:8).

Hope for Those Who Prepare

“The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of distress; He cares for those who trust in Him” (Nahum 1:7).

When indignation comes, the prepared heart is hidden in Christ, sheltered by His finished work, and secure in the unshakeable goodness of God.
