How to ready hearts for teachings?
How can we prepare our hearts to receive teachings like the disciples did?

Setting the Scene

“Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up on the mountain, and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him.” (Matthew 5:1)

Those few words reveal how hearts become ready soil for the Lord’s teaching.

Step Away from the Noise

• The disciples left the multitude to climb higher with Jesus.

Psalm 46:10: “Be still, and know that I am God.” Quiet spaces clear room for His voice.

• Practical application: schedule intentional moments of silence—turn off devices, find a solitary spot, linger with Scripture open.

Draw Near to His Presence

James 4:8: “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” The disciples moved toward Him; He never turns away the seeker.

• Approach with expectancy rather than routine. Carry an open Bible and an open heart together.

Adopt a Humble Posture

• Jesus “sat down,” assuming the traditional rabbinic teaching position; the disciples took the learner’s place at His feet.

Isaiah 66:2: “This is the one I will esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at My word.”

• Cultivate humility by confessing dependence: acknowledge, “Lord, I need Your wisdom more than my own opinions.”

Choose Obedient Readiness

Luke 11:28: “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”

• The disciples came prepared to act on what they would hear.

• Before opening Scripture, settle the decision to follow through, whatever the cost.

Gather with Like-Minded Learners

• They approached as a group. Fellowship sharpens focus and accountability.

Hebrews 10:24-25 calls believers to “spur one another on toward love and good deeds… encouraging one another.”

• Join or form a small gathering dedicated to reading, discussing, and applying the Word.

Climb Higher Daily

• Ascending the mountain was a deliberate physical effort. Spiritual growth requires consistent discipline.

2 Peter 1:5-7 urges adding faith’s building blocks—goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, love.

• Set attainable goals: read a Gospel chapter daily, memorize one verse a week, journal reflections.

Keep Eyes on the Teacher

Hebrews 12:2: “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.”

• Distractions fade when gaze is locked on Him.

• Practice: visualize sitting among the disciples on that hillside, hearing His voice speak the same words into today’s challenges.

Expect Transformation

Romans 12:2 promises renewal of the mind through Scripture.

• The Sermon on the Mount reshaped the disciples’ worldview; the same authoritative words still transform.

• Anticipate conviction, comfort, and course correction each time the Bible is opened.

Summary Pathway

1. Step away from distractions.

2. Draw near with humility.

3. Offer pre-decided obedience.

4. Seek fellowship around the Word.

5. Pursue disciplined, upward growth.

6. Fix eyes on Christ, expecting change.

Walk this pathway and the heart becomes fertile ground—just like the disciples’ hearts on that mountainside—ready to receive and live out every teaching the Master gives.
