How to rejoice like in Psalm 122:2?
How can we rejoice like those standing in Jerusalem's gates in Psalm 122:2?

Setting the scene

Psalm 122 is one of the Songs of Ascents—pilgrim songs sung on the uphill walk to Zion. Reaching the gates meant reaching the dwelling place of God, the very destination their hearts longed for. “Our feet are standing in your gates, O Jerusalem.” (Psalm 122:2)

Recognizing our present Jerusalem

• Christ has opened the true and living way. “But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem” (Hebrews 12:22).

• Every gathering of believers becomes a foretaste of that city. “For where two or three gather together in My name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

• One day the gates of the New Jerusalem will never close (Revelation 21:25). Until then, worship brings us to the threshold by faith.

Practical ways to rejoice like gate-standers

• Arrive expectantly

– Prepare your heart before worship as the pilgrims prepared for feast days.

– Meditate on the week’s text or songs so your spirit reaches the gate before your body does.

• Celebrate corporate unity

– Notice and thank God for the diversity of brothers and sisters around you (Psalm 122:3–4).

– Sing loudly; pilgrims lifted one voice inside Jerusalem’s walls.

• Seek the Lord’s beauty

– Fix your thoughts on Christ, not on preferences or distractions (Psalm 27:4).

– Let the preached Word, the Lord’s Table, and congregational praise draw you into His presence.

• Pursue peace and security for God’s people

– Pray for the church’s purity and mission (Psalm 122:6–7).

– Serve someone in the body; sacrificial love amplifies joy (Galatians 5:13).

Living out gate joy throughout the week

• Recall Sunday’s truths during ordinary moments; replay a hymn or verse while commuting.

• Keep short accounts with God—confession restores the sense of nearness (1 John 1:9).

• Practice thankfulness; list daily evidences of His steadfast love (Psalm 107:1).

• Look ahead to the eternal city; hope fuels present rejoicing (Revelation 21:2-4).

Scriptures to feed the joy

Psalm 16:11 “In Your presence is fullness of joy.”

Isaiah 2:3 “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD.”

John 14:3 “I am going to prepare a place for you.”

1 Peter 2:5 “You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house.”

Summary refresh

We rejoice like the pilgrims by realizing we already stand, through Christ, at the gates of God’s dwelling; by entering gathered worship with expectation; by uniting in praise and service; and by carrying that gate-side gladness into every day while we await the fully opened gates of the New Jerusalem.
