How to resist temptations like Gehazi?
In what ways can we guard against similar temptations as Gehazi faced?

The Setting and the Snare

2 Kings 5 tells how Elisha’s servant Gehazi secretly pursued Naaman, accepted silver and garments, then lied to Elisha. “But he went in and stood before his master, and Elisha asked him, ‘Where have you been, Gehazi?’ ‘Your servant did not go anywhere,’ he replied.” (2 Kings 5:25) His choices sprang from greed, deception, and a failure to trust God’s sufficiency.

Recognize the Root Temptations

• Greed: wanting more than God has allotted (1 Timothy 6:9–10).

• Covetousness: craving what seems impressive or luxurious (Exodus 20:17).

• Deception: hiding sin to preserve reputation (Proverbs 28:13).

• Disregard for spiritual authority: ignoring a clear directive from God’s prophet (Hebrews 13:17).

Practical Guards for the Heart

• Fill the heart with Scripture. “I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You.” (Psalm 119:11)

• Pray for contentment. “If we have food and clothing, we will be content with these.” (1 Timothy 6:8).

• Monitor motives. Ask: Am I seeking God’s glory or my own gain? (Colossians 3:17).

• Flee early. “But you, O man of God, flee from these things and pursue righteousness.” (1 Timothy 6:11).

• Remember divine oversight: “The eyes of the LORD are in every place, observing the evil and the good.” (Proverbs 15:3).

Safeguards in Community

• Invite accountability—trusted believers who can ask straightforward questions (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10).

• Keep financial dealings transparent (2 Corinthians 8:20-21).

• Serve others generously; generosity uproots greed (Acts 20:35).

Cultivate an Eternal Perspective

• Treasure in heaven over treasure on earth (Matthew 6:19-21).

• View stewardship, not ownership: “What do you have that you did not receive?” (1 Corinthians 4:7).

• Expect future reward for faithfulness (2 Corinthians 5:10).

Daily Practices that Fortify

• Regular confession: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us.” (1 John 1:9).

• Work with integrity: “He who steals must steal no longer, but must labor, doing good.” (Ephesians 4:28).

• Practice gratitude—thank God aloud for present provisions (Psalm 103:2).

• Fast from excess—periodically deny non-essentials to train the soul (1 Corinthians 9:27).

Encouragement from God’s Promises

• God satisfies legitimate needs: “My God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19).

• He provides escape from temptation: “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man… He will also provide an escape, so that you can stand up under it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13).

• The Spirit empowers obedience: “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16).

By anchoring hearts in truth, surrounding ourselves with honest community, and keeping eyes on eternal treasure, we can stand firm where Gehazi fell.
