How can we apply the need for compassion in our relationships today? Context: A Tragic Lack of Compassion – Judges 19:28 “‘Get up,’ he told her, ‘let us go.’ But there was no response. So the man put her on his donkey and set out for home.” • A literal event from Israel’s darkest days, preserved by the Holy Spirit. • The Levite’s indifference toward his concubine exposes the deadly cost of hardened hearts. • Scripture contrasts human coldness with God’s heart of mercy, urging believers to choose compassion. God’s Continuous Call to Compassion • Ephesians 4:32 – “Be kind and compassionate to one another…” • Colossians 3:12 – “Clothe yourselves with hearts of compassion…” • 1 Peter 3:8 – “…be tender-hearted and humble.” • Luke 10:33-34 – The Samaritan “was moved with compassion” and acted. • Matthew 9:36 – Jesus “was moved with compassion for them.” Daily Expressions of Compassion Speak with care • Replace brusque commands with gentle, honoring words (Proverbs 15:1). • Listen before responding (James 1:19). See people, not problems • Affirm every person as God’s image-bearer (Genesis 1:27). • Value presence over productivity. Feel and act • Genuine compassion meets needs (1 John 3:17). • Offer meals, rides, childcare, or financial help when hardship strikes. Protect the vulnerable • Proverbs 31:8-9 urges speaking up for the voiceless. • Confront abuse; never excuse it. Forgive and restore • Extend the mercy you have received (Ephesians 4:32). • Pursue reconciliation instead of revenge. Cultivating Compassionate Homes • Begin each day with Scripture that reveals Christ’s gentleness (Matthew 11:29). • Hold family “check-ins” to share joys and burdens. • Model servant leadership—parents and spouses taking the lower place (Mark 10:45). • Resolve conflict quickly; silence grows cold. Strengthening Compassion in the Church • Welcome newcomers by name and offer practical help. • Establish ministries for widows, single parents, and the disabled (James 1:27). • Share testimonies of mercy to celebrate God’s compassion. • Lament and intercede together (Romans 12:15). Extending Compassion Beyond the Church • Volunteer at crisis-pregnancy centers, shelters, and prisons. • Advocate for laws that protect life and dignity. • Support missionaries who bring Christ’s compassion to the unreached. • Use social media to encourage, not belittle. Motivation: Christ’s Compassion Toward Us Titus 3:4-5 – “When the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, He saved us…” Remembering His mercy softens hearts and fuels compassionate living, the opposite of the Levite’s coldness. Living It Out Today • Ask the Spirit before each interaction to reflect Christ’s tenderness. • Keep margin in schedules to notice others’ needs. • Memorize one compassion verse this week and pray it over relationships. • Trust God to open gospel doors through acts of mercy. The Levite’s harsh words warn us; Christ’s example empowers us. By the Spirit’s strength, believers can shine compassionate light into every relationship, home, church, and community. |
