How to show empathy in church?
In what ways can we show empathy and compassion in our church community?

Setting the Scene in Acts 20:37

“They all wept openly as they embraced Paul and kissed him.” (Acts 20:37)

Paul is about to leave the Ephesian elders, perhaps never to see them again. Their tears, embraces, and kisses paint a moving portrait of shared love and deep empathy within the early church.

Key Observations from the Passage

• Emotional transparency: No one hides his feelings; sorrow is expressed freely.

• Physical affection: Genuine, appropriate touch communicates care.

• Mutual respect: Elders and apostle alike value the relationship more than personal comfort.

• Shared faith foundation: Their unity in Christ fuels their compassion.

Practical Ways to Show Empathy and Compassion in the Church

• Listen with undivided attention

– Let people finish their stories without rushing to solutions.

– Affirm their feelings: “I hear how heavy that is for you.”

• Share sorrow and joy

Romans 12:15: “Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.”

– Attend funerals and celebrations alike; presence matters.

• Offer appropriate, caring touch

– A handshake, hug, or pat on the shoulder can wordlessly say, “You’re not alone.”

– Exercise wisdom and respect boundaries.

• Serve quietly behind the scenes

– Prepare meals, run errands, babysit, or give rides.

Galatians 6:2: “Carry one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

• Speak encouragement often

1 Thessalonians 5:11: “Therefore encourage and build one another up.”

– Send a note, text, or phone call that uplifts.

• Practice hospitality

Hebrews 13:2: “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers.”

– Invite newcomers or those who are lonely to your table.

• Pray with and for each other on the spot

– When someone shares a need, pause and pray together right then.

– Demonstrates faith and solidarity.

• Maintain unity through humility

1 Peter 3:8: “Be like-minded and sympathetic, love as brothers, be tender-hearted and humble.”

– Put others’ preferences ahead of personal agendas.

Supporting Scriptures That Echo This Heart

John 13:34-35 – Love marks true discipleship.

Colossians 3:12-13 – Compassion, kindness, gentleness, and patience flow from our new identity in Christ.

Philippians 2:1-4 – Look not only to your own interests, but to the interests of others.

Putting It into Practice This Week

• Identify one person in the congregation who might feel overlooked; reach out with a word of encouragement.

• Volunteer for a practical need—deliver a meal, help with childcare, or visit someone shut-in.

• In conversations after worship, aim to listen twice as much as you speak.

• End each day asking: “Did someone experience Christ’s compassion through me today?”
