How to stop division by the unspiritual?
What steps prevent division caused by those "devoid of the Spirit"?

Identify the Source of the Rift

• Jude paints the agitators plainly: “worldly and devoid of the Spirit” (Jude 1:19).

• Remember their marks—sensual priorities, self-promotion, disdain for biblical authority (cf. 2 Peter 2:1-3). Recognizing the real cause helps us refuse their bait.

Strengthen Your Inner Core

• “Building yourselves up in your most holy faith” (Jude 1:20). Regular, thoughtful exposure to Scripture fortifies discernment (Acts 20:32).

• Memorize, meditate, and discuss truth in community; a well-fed soul is hard to divide.

Pray in the Holy Spirit

Jude 1:20 continues: “praying in the Holy Spirit.” Spirit-directed prayer keeps motives pure, tempers fleshly reactions, and invites divine wisdom (James 1:5).

• Corporate prayer knits hearts together (Acts 4:24-31).

Keep Yourselves in the Love of God

• “Keep yourselves in the love of God” (Jude 1:21). Actively rehearse the gospel, celebrate Christ’s sacrifice, practice tangible acts of love (John 13:34-35).

• Love disarms suspicion and counters the coldness that division breeds (1 Peter 4:8).

Preserve Unity by Truth

• “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:3). Unity is Spirit-given, truth-guarded.

• Refuse gossip; speak “the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15).

• Test every teaching against Scripture (Acts 17:11). A shared standard prevents opinion-driven fractures.

Practice Wise Mercy

Jude 1:22-23 outlines three responses:

– Show gentle mercy to doubters.

– Rescue those drifting, “snatching them from the fire.”

– Extend cautious mercy to the stubborn, “hating even the clothing stained by the flesh.”

• Tailor help to the heart condition; mercy plus discernment blocks both hardness and compromise.

Draw Clear Boundaries

• “Turn away from them” when people persist in divisive error (Romans 16:17).

• Follow Matthew 18:15-17: private appeal, small-group confirmation, congregational involvement, and, if unrepentant, separation.

• Boundaries are not lack of love; they protect the flock (Titus 3:10).

Stay Future-Focused

• “Await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you eternal life” (Jude 1:21). A hope-filled perspective shrinks petty quarrels.

Colossians 3:2: “Set your minds on things above.” Shared anticipation of Christ’s return unites believers around what matters most.
