What actions can we take to prevent our "land" from becoming "desolate"? Setting the Scene “ ‘If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people, and if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.’ ” (2 Chronicles 7:13-14) God describes very real judgments—drought, locusts, plague—that render a land desolate. Yet He also lays out a four-part remedy that invites His healing. Those same actions remain our sure path today. Four Essential Responses • Humble ourselves • Pray • Seek His face • Turn from wicked ways Each is indispensable; together they open the door for God’s restoration. Humble Ourselves: Laying Down Pride • Admit our total dependence on the Lord (James 4:6). • Esteem others above ourselves (Philippians 2:3-4). • Publicly acknowledge personal and national sins without excuse (Ezra 9:6-7). Pray: Inviting Heaven’s Intervention • Consistent, focused intercession for leaders, churches, and communities (1 Timothy 2:1-2). • Specific confession, naming sins that grieve God (Psalm 32:5). • Persistent pleading for mercy rather than mere relief (Daniel 9:17-19). Seek His Face: Pursuing Relationship, Not Just Relief • Daily time in Scripture to know His character (Psalm 27:8). • Worship that centers on God’s worthiness, not personal preference (Psalm 95:1-7). • Aligning plans and policies with His revealed will (Proverbs 3:5-6). Turn from Wicked Ways: Concrete Repentance • End practices God calls abominable—abortion, sexual immorality, dishonest gain (Isaiah 1:16-17). • Restore what was stolen, make restitution where needed (Luke 19:8-9). • Implement righteous laws that protect the vulnerable and honor biblical marriage (Micah 6:8). God’s Promised Response • “I will hear from heaven” — Divine attention guaranteed (Psalm 34:15). • “Forgive their sin” — Moral cleansing precedes physical blessing (1 John 1:9). • “Heal their land” — Rain returns, crops flourish, society thrives (Deuteronomy 28:12-13). Additional Scriptural Echoes • Deuteronomy 11:13-15 — Obedience brings seasonal rains and harvest. • Jeremiah 18:7-8 — A nation that repents averts announced disaster. • Isaiah 58:6-12 — Righteous living rebuilds “ancient ruins” and restores paths to dwell in. Living It Out Together Begin where you are—home, church, workplace. Model humility, cultivate intercession, hunger for God’s presence, and turn decisively from sin. As these individual acts multiply, communities shift, cultures change, and God fulfills His unwavering promise to heal the land, keeping it from ever becoming desolate. |
