How to stop scheming against others?
How can we avoid "plotting evil" against others in our daily lives?

Setting the Scene

Zechariah 8:17: “Do not plot evil in your hearts against your neighbor, and do not love false oaths, for I hate all these things,” declares the LORD.

The restored community God envisions is built on truth, justice, and peace. Hidden schemes poison that vision.

Understanding “Plotting Evil”

• “Plot” = deliberate, calculated intention.

• It begins “in your hearts” before any action (Mark 7:21-22).

• “Neighbor” = anyone God places near you (Luke 10:36-37).

• Includes resentment, sabotage, gossip, silent wishes for harm (Proverbs 3:29; Micah 2:1).

Practical Steps to Guard the Heart

• Saturate your mind with Scripture (Psalm 119:11).

• Walk by the Spirit, not the flesh (Galatians 5:16-17).

• Capture rogue thoughts immediately (2 Corinthians 10:5).

• Replace evil plans with purposeful good (Galatians 6:10).

• Guard your speech (Ephesians 4:29).

• Forgive quickly; bitterness breeds schemes (Ephesians 4:31-32).

Cultivating a Christlike Mindset

• Follow Jesus’ example of non-retaliation (1 Peter 2:21-23).

• Pray for those who wrong you (Matthew 5:44).

• Agree with God’s hatred of hidden malice (Zechariah 8:17).

• Trust God for justice (Romans 12:19).

Accountability within Community

• Stay connected—spur one another on (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Invite honest, loving correction (Proverbs 27:6).

• Serve alongside others; shared mission redirects energy toward good.

Daily Self-Check

– Am I harboring resentment?

– Do I secretly hope someone fails?

– Have my words harmed another’s reputation?

– Did I seize chances to do good today?

Confess quickly when the Spirit convicts (1 John 1:9) and follow up with a concrete act of kindness.

Encouraging Example: Overcoming Evil with Good

Joseph told his brothers: “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good” (Genesis 50:20). He chose forgiveness, feeding his betrayers instead of plotting revenge—exactly what Romans 12:21 commands: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
