How to support and uplift church leaders?
What practical steps can we take to encourage and uplift church leaders?

Setting the Scene

“Therefore let no one despise him. Send him on his way in peace, that he may come to me; for I am expecting him with the brothers.” — 1 Corinthians 16:11

Paul writes these words about Timothy, a young leader who could easily have been dismissed or discouraged. The apostle’s appeal gives us a timeless pattern for uplifting every pastor, elder, missionary, and ministry worker God entrusts to our churches.

Why Lifting Leaders Matters

• Leaders are God’s gifts to equip the body (Ephesians 4:11–12).

• Their labor is “for your souls” (Hebrews 13:17).

• When they are strengthened, the whole church thrives (Philippians 1:25).

Practical Steps for Encouraging and Uplifting Church Leaders

1. Guard Their Reputation

• “Let no one despise him” (1 Corinthians 16:11).

• Refuse gossip; speak well of your leaders (Titus 3:2).

• Correct misinformation promptly and kindly.

2. Grant Them Peaceful Ministry Space

• “Send him on his way in peace” (1 Corinthians 16:11).

• Respect their need for study, prayer, and family time.

• Offer administrative help to lighten non-pastoral tasks.

3. Express Tangible Appreciation

• “The one who receives instruction in the word must share all good things with his instructor” (Galatians 6:6).

• Write notes, give testimonies of how sermons impacted you, celebrate ministry anniversaries.

• Provide meals, childcare, or a weekend retreat.

4. Stand with Them Publicly

• Paul expected the Corinthians to affirm Timothy “with the brothers” (1 Corinthians 16:11).

• Introduce your leaders warmly to guests; attend events where they speak.

• Defend biblical decisions made in difficult times (Philippians 1:7).

5. Support Them Financially and Practically

• “The laborer is worthy of his wages” (1 Timothy 5:18).

• Ensure fair compensation, health care, and sabbaticals.

• Donate tools for ministry—books, software, reliable transportation.

6. Pray Intentionally and Regularly

• Paul repeatedly asked churches to pray for him (Ephesians 6:19–20).

• Create prayer teams focused on leaders’ spiritual vitality, family, health, and wisdom.

• Tell them you are praying, and ask for specific requests.

7. Obey and Yield Joyfully

• “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls…so that their work will be a joy, not a burden” (Hebrews 13:17).

• Receive correction with humility.

• Follow church vision initiatives promptly and cheerfully.

8. Encourage Lifelong Growth

• Sponsor conferences or continuing education.

• Supply quality theological resources (2 Timothy 4:13).

• Offer mentoring relationships with seasoned pastors.

Living Out the Charge

Paul’s single verse calls believers to protect, refresh, and champion their leaders. As we put these steps into practice, we not only fulfill 1 Corinthians 16:11 but also echo the broader scriptural pattern: “esteem them very highly in love because of their work” (1 Thessalonians 5:12–13). In doing so, we partner with God for the flourishing of His church.

How can we support fellow believers in their ministry, as Paul suggests?
