How to support those devoted like Paul?
How can we support others who are "devoted to the word" like Paul?

Opening Passage

“After Silas and Timothy had come down from Macedonia, Paul was wholly absorbed with the word, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ.” — Acts 18:5

The Example of Paul’s Devotion

• “Wholly absorbed”—Paul gave his full focus, energy, and schedule to teaching Scripture.

• His aim was crystal clear: proclaim Jesus as the Messiah.

• As soon as partners arrived, he could pour himself even further into the ministry of the Word.

Why Our Support Matters

• Word-centered servants can stay on task when physical, financial, and emotional needs are met (Philippians 4:15-18).

• Shared partnership increases gospel reach: “How can they preach unless they are sent?” (Romans 10:15).

• God credits fruit to every helper, not just the preacher (Philippians 1:5-7).

Practical Ways to Uphold Word-Workers Today

Spiritual backing

• Pray daily for clarity, courage, and open doors (2 Thessalonians 3:1).

• Cover their families in prayer protection.

Relational encouragement

• Send timely notes, texts, or calls that highlight specific ways their ministry has blessed you (2 Timothy 1:16-18).

• Invite them for meals or restful outings that expect nothing in return.

Material generosity

• Provide consistent financial support so they can focus on teaching (Galatians 6:6; 1 Corinthians 9:14).

• Share resources—books, study tools, reliable transportation, office space.

Hands-on assistance

• Volunteer skills: accounting, media, childcare, event setup.

• Offer lodging or airfare when travel is required (3 John 5-8).

Advocacy

• Introduce them to new opportunities and like-minded partners.

• Speak well of their ministry, protecting them from slander (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13).

Encouragement from Other Scriptures

Acts 20:32 — “Now I commit you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up.”

Colossians 4:17 — “See to it that you fulfill the ministry you have received in the Lord.”

Hebrews 6:10 — “God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you have shown Him as you have helped His saints.”

Living It Out This Week

• Choose one devoted teacher of Scripture and commit to daily intercession.

• Identify a tangible need you can meet—groceries, a car repair, or a study resource.

• Share an encouraging testimony of how their teaching strengthened your walk.

• Invite a friend to join you in regular support, multiplying the blessing.

God delights to use ordinary believers to undergird extraordinary gospel work. As we stand beside those devoted to the Word, we join the very mission that captured Paul’s heart.

In what ways can we prioritize sharing the gospel in our daily lives?
