How to tackle slander in churches?
In what ways can we address "slander" within our Christian communities?

The Call to Put Away Slander

“Let all bitterness and rage and anger and outcry and slander be removed from you, along with all malice.” (Ephesians 4:31)

• Scripture treats slander as something that must be decisively “removed.”

• The verb implies an intentional, once-for-all choice that we reinforce daily.

Why Slander Is Sin

• It attacks God’s image-bearers (Genesis 1:27) and therefore dishonors their Maker.

• It breaks the ninth commandment by bearing false witness—or twisting truth to harm (Exodus 20:16).

• It grieves the Holy Spirit who unites the body (Ephesians 4:30).

• It invites God’s discipline: “Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, him I will destroy” (Psalm 101:5).

Practical Steps to Root It Out

1. Examine the heart

• “Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34).

• Ask the Spirit to expose envy, bitterness, or pride that fuels slander.

2. Guard the tongue

• “Where there is no wood, the fire goes out… so where there is no gossip, strife ceases” (Proverbs 26:20).

• Choose silence rather than speculation; speak only facts that build up (Ephesians 4:29).

3. Teach and remind one another

• Regularly read passages that condemn slander (James 4:11; 1 Peter 2:1).

• Model transparent, gracious speech from the pulpit, in small groups, and at home.

4. Confront biblically

• If you hear slander, gently ask: “Have you spoken to the person involved?” (Matthew 18:15).

• Redirect the conversation toward reconciliation rather than rumor.

5. Encourage confession and forgiveness

• Slanderers seek forgiveness from God and the offended party (1 John 1:9).

• The injured extend grace, imitating Christ (Colossians 3:13).

6. Establish accountability structures

• Pair believers in prayer partnerships.

• Use elders or mature members to mediate recurring issues.

Building a Culture of Truth and Grace

• Celebrate testimonies of resolved conflict to reinforce a slander-free norm.

• Replace tearing down with intentional, specific encouragement (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Keep the gospel central; when hearts are full of Christ, mouths overflow with praise, not poison.

Encouragement to Persevere

• Slander may persist, but “the Lord will guard the feet of His saints” (1 Samuel 2:9).

• Stand firm; every word spoken in faithfulness will bear fruit (Galatians 6:9).
