How to truly grasp Jesus' teachings?
How can we ensure we correctly understand Jesus' teachings, unlike in John 8:22?

Setting the Scene

John 8 unfolds during the Feast of Tabernacles. Jesus is teaching in the temple courts, declaring, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12). The religious leaders argue back and forth with Him, questioning His authority and origins.

Where the Crowd Got Lost (John 8:22)

“‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ So the Jews began to ask, ‘Will He kill Himself?’” (John 8:22)

• They interpreted Jesus’ words through earthly categories—suicide, geography, politics—missing His heavenly focus.

• Their hearts were hardened (John 8:43). Spiritual blindness led to a tragic misreading of plain speech.

Principles for Grasping Jesus’ Words

1. Stay in the Passage’s Context

• Read before and after the statement (John 8:21–24). Jesus speaks of returning to the Father, not self-harm.

• Ask what He is addressing: sin, unbelief, and eternal destiny.

2. Compare Scripture with Scripture

John 13:33 and 14:2–4 clarify the same phrase, “Where I am going, you cannot come,” referring to His ascension and preparing a place.

Hebrews 9:24 reinforces that He entered “heaven itself.”

3. Depend on the Holy Spirit

• “The Helper, the Holy Spirit…will teach you all things” (John 14:26).

• “He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures” (Luke 24:45).

4. Approach with Humility and Repentance

• “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6).

• Sin clouds perception; confession clears the lenses (Psalm 32:5).

5. Study Diligently and Accurately

• “Be diligent to present yourself approved…accurately handling the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15).

• Use reliable translations and tools, but let Scripture set the agenda.

6. Test What You Hear

• The Bereans “examined the Scriptures daily to see if these teachings were true” (Acts 17:11).

• Measure every interpretation against the whole counsel of God.

Putting It into Practice

• Read John 8:21–30 aloud, noting repeated themes of origin, destination, belief, and sin.

• Trace “where I am going” through John’s Gospel; list each occurrence and context.

• Pray Psalm 119:18—“Open my eyes that I may behold wondrous things from Your law”—depending on the Spirit for illumination.

• Discuss insights with grounded believers; iron sharpens iron (Proverbs 27:17).

• Obey the truth you discover; understanding grows as we walk in the light we have (John 8:12).
