What steps can we take to truly "obey the voice of the LORD"? Setting the Anchor “Now if you will diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God, to carefully follow all His commandments I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth.” (Deuteronomy 28:1) Hearing Begins with a Yielded Heart • A heart that is soft toward God is the starting point (Ezekiel 36:26). • Surrender daily: “Not my will, but Yours” (Luke 22:42). • Ask the Spirit to illuminate Scripture so His voice is unmistakable (John 16:13). Stay Immersed in the Word • Read, study, and memorize; His voice is most clearly heard in His written Word (Psalm 119:105). • Set a plan—portion of Old Testament, New Testament, Psalms/Proverbs each day. • Journal key commands you encounter; obedience begins with clarity. Cultivate a Listening Life • Build quiet into your schedule; Elijah heard a “gentle whisper” (1 Kings 19:12). • Fast from noise—social media, news, entertainment—to tune your ear. • Practice “breath prayers” through the day: brief Scripture–saturated phrases that keep your heart attentive. Respond Immediately and Completely Partial or delayed obedience is disobedience (1 Samuel 15:22-23). Practical pattern: 1. Hear—identify the specific directive. 2. Agree—confess God’s right to rule. 3. Act—take the first concrete step before the day ends. Walk in Consistent Fellowship • Meet weekly with believers who prize obedience (Hebrews 10:24-25). • Invite accountability: “Ask me if I followed through.” • Share testimonies of obedience; celebration reinforces faithfulness. Guard Against Competing Voices • Test every impression against Scripture (1 John 4:1). • Reject teachings that downplay holiness (2 Peter 2:1-3). • Remember the enemy mimics God’s voice; clarity comes from the Word’s plumb line. Align Your Lifestyle with His Commands • Finances: honor Him first (Proverbs 3:9-10). • Relationships: forgive quickly (Ephesians 4:32). • Purity: flee temptation (1 Corinthians 6:18). • Witness: speak of Christ openly (Matthew 28:19-20). Small acts of everyday obedience train the heart for larger assignments. Expect Blessing and Correction • Blessing: “All these blessings will come upon you” (Deuteronomy 28:2). • Correction: “The LORD disciplines the one He loves” (Hebrews 12:6). Both flow from His fatherly commitment to our good. Persevere to the End • Obedience is a lifelong race, not a sprint (Hebrews 12:1-2). • Fix your eyes on the One who perfectly obeyed: “I always do what pleases Him” (John 8:29). • The promise awaits: “Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.” (Revelation 2:10) Taking these steps turns hearing into heeding, and heeding into habit—so we truly obey the voice of the LORD. |
