How to trust God in scarcity?
What practical steps can we take to trust God during times of scarcity?

Setting the Scene: Scarcity in Revelation 6:5

“ ‘Then I looked and saw a black horse, and its rider held a pair of scales in his hand.’ ” (Revelation 6:5)

The black horse pictures a time when daily necessities are weighed out carefully because they are in short supply (see verse 6). Scarcity is real, yet even this seal is opened by the Lamb—Jesus rules over every shortage we face.

Recognizing God’s Sovereignty over Scarcity

• The Lamb breaks the seal, not random fate (Revelation 6:1–5).

• “The earth is the LORD’s, and the fullness thereof” (Psalm 24:1).

• Because God controls both abundance and lack, our first response is worshipful trust rather than panic.

Practical Steps to Trust God When Resources Are Thin

1. Rehearse His track record

• “I have been young and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken” (Psalm 37:25).

• Keep a written list of past provisions; review it when anxiety rises.

2. Prioritize seeking His kingdom

• “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33).

• Guard devotional time; scarcity does not excuse spiritual neglect.

3. Replace worry with petition and praise

• “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6–7)

• Turn each financial concern into a specific prayer, ending with thanks for how He will answer.

4. Practice faith-filled generosity

• The widow of Zarephath fed Elijah first and her jar never ran dry (1 Kings 17:8-16).

• Give something—even small—to remind your heart that God, not money, is your supply.

5. Work diligently and wisely

• “He who gathers crops in summer is a prudent son” (Proverbs 10:5).

• Budget, reduce expenses, pursue employment wholeheartedly, trusting God to bless honest labor.

6. Stand on covenant promises

Malachi 3:10—He invites us to test His faithfulness in giving.

Hebrews 13:5—“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

Encouraging Examples from Scripture

• Joseph in famine (Genesis 41): strategic planning under God’s guidance preserved nations.

• The widow’s oil (2 Kings 4:1-7): God multiplied what she already had.

• Feeding the 5,000 (John 6:1-13): scarce resources placed in Jesus’ hands became more than enough.

Promises to Hold onto

• “And my God will supply all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19)

• “Those who seek the LORD will lack no good thing.” (Psalm 34:10)

• “Your Father knows that you need them.” (Luke 12:30)

Walking Forward in Confidence

Scarcity never surprises the One who holds the scales. Keep your eyes on the Lamb, act on His Word, and watch Him transform limited resources into living proof of His limitless care.
