What steps can we take to trust God in difficult situations today? Setting the Scene Numbers 21:5: “and the people spoke against God and against Moses: ‘Why have you led us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread or water, and we detest this miserable food!’” Israel is tired, thirsty, and frightened. Their words strip away any veneer of trust. Yet in the same chapter, God both disciplines and delivers (vv. 6–9). The pattern gives us timeless steps for learning to trust Him when life feels like a desert. Spotting Our Struggle • Complaining questions God’s character: “Why have You…?” • Fear magnifies lack: “There is no bread or water…” • Ingratitude despises God’s provision: “We detest this miserable food!” Recognizing these heart-roots keeps us from repeating Israel’s missteps. Step 1: Acknowledge Complaining as Distrust • Call it what it is—not personality, but unbelief (Hebrews 3:12). • Confess specifically; God welcomes honesty (1 John 1:9). • Replace grumbling with thanks (Ephesians 5:20). Step 2: Remember God’s Proven Track Record • Israel forgot the manna, water from the rock, parted sea. We list our own evidences: – Past answered prayers – Unexpected provisions – Salvations and changed lives • Psalm 77:11: “I will remember the works of the LORD; yes, I will remember Your wonders of old.” Step 3: Focus on the Ultimate Provision—Christ • Numbers 21:8–9 foreshadows John 3:14–15: the bronze serpent lifted up points to Jesus on the cross. • Romans 8:32: “He who did not spare His own Son… how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?” If God met our greatest need at Calvary, He will handle today’s wilderness. Step 4: Choose Daily Dependence Practical helps: • Start mornings with Proverbs 3:5–6 aloud. • Memorize a promise for each worry category (e.g., Philippians 4:6–7 for anxiety, Isaiah 41:10 for fear). • Journal new mercies (Lamentations 3:22–23) before bed. Step 5: Obey the Next Clear Instruction • Israel had to “look” at the serpent (Numbers 21:9). Trust shows up in obedient action. • James 2:17 reminds us faith is proved by deeds. • Ask, “What has God already told me to do?”—then do it even while emotions lag behind. Step 6: Stay Connected to Faith-Building Community • God addressed the nation together; we need fellowship (Hebrews 10:24–25). • Share testimonies, sing truth-filled songs, bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2). Living It Out Today Trust grows as we: 1. Identify and repent of complaining. 2. Rehearse God’s past faithfulness. 3. Anchor hopes in Christ’s finished work. 4. Feed on Scripture daily. 5. Act on what we already know. 6. Walk with other believers. Difficult situations expose our hearts, but they also invite us to experience the God who still turns wilderness journeys into faith-strengthening stories. |
